Oh dear, advertisers!!!

OK, so its tack is a bit wonky...but it's not like the horse is really suffering is it? The whole "tut tut, look what the novices have done now" approach really frustrates me. As others have said, we all have to start somewhere.

It's not in itself, we all had to start learning sometime and we all have loads to still learn, however taking responsibility for an animal when you clearly do not know what you are doing is unacceptable. There are plenty of riding schools that offer stable management lessons, plenty of trainers and welfare support out there so there is no excuse for buying a pony when you do not know what you are doing.
 
Well, I don't want to take over the post or blow the discussion out of proportion but I think that basic issues like tacking up correctly are a pre-requisite for buying a horse. I advertised a pony for loan a few years ago only to get quite a few people come up who could not even tack him up (one lady fell off trying to get on from the mounting block because she had not done the girth up at all (I mean completely loose), and another tried to put the rug on back to front, i.e. the front straps tied under the tail and the back straps round the neck!). You don't need to know anything if you just want to ride, just go to a riding school and they will take care of you. However, if you want to be responsible for anothing living being you need to know the basics of how to look after it. Ill fitting tack causes pain and can be dangerous to both horse and rider.

Anyway, better go do some work now or I'll get fired

I agree, but as you see with lots of people, they have a few riding lessons and then think they know it all. It's only once you have more experience under your belt that you start to realise you actually know nothing at all and become a bit more humble about things. I'd guess those people were like that and have now realised they don't know it all, so are selling the pony on. And in an ideal world the person who sold them to pony would have been more responsible, however there are plenty of people out there who just want to make a quick buck and don't care where the pony goes.

I think you miss the point. It is not crime to be inexperienced. The point being made is incorrectly tacked up, which should be basic knowledge for a horse owner. If you can't see the tack is fitted incorrectly, what other more important things are being missed?

I don't count myself as experienced but I have owned horses for 20 years and I'm sure as hell not adverse to asking anybody for advice on something I am not sure of.

I love how this has turned into a "I was only trying to wind you all up" post now...
 
No, no, it's not a "wind you up post" BUT that is what it precisely seems to do. The most innocuous posts seem to wind somebody up, which I find quite odd.

Life's too short to be getting uptight about some unknown person out on the ether. I wonder if these kind of people are that argumentative face to face or is it because they can hide behind the anonymity of a forum that they do it.
