Just back from Brecon Market.... :-(

So many market violations TBH...The welfare of horses and ponies is absolutely rock bottom ATM...

Many sold for meat...many unwell/abused/bewilldered......some sold for less than 20 guineas.......when will it all end?

God Bless their little souls........................

Its soo sad for them. At the top end of the market things are still shifting, but bottom end really is rock bottom at the moment..and the snow is coming i fear it'll get alot worse before it gets better.

On a more cheery note.....bought mine for 50 guineas at a mart.....best decision of my life...love him to bits....
Bryndu:)

Oh god that must have been heart rending to witness, was the RSPCA not in attendence.

The way things are going its going to get worse and if we get the snow as forecast there is going to be many more welfare cases.

Sad as it is perhaps today the ones that went to the meat man are the lucky ones and wont have to endure a winter starving.

It's been like that most of the summer tbh. Nice riding welsh cobs going for £155 a few months ago and little colt foals for £5 or under.

The worst I've seen there though was a pen full of sheltand pony mares and foals around 5-6 in the pen. And for a laugh someone put a sheltand stallion in with them, it was awful to watch. Lots of men stood at the gate egging it all on. I put in a complaint only to be told to do it my self. I normally would of done but with all the men there I didn't feel safe doing it. I then though my toys out to the auctioneer and they agreed to separate them.

It's hill billy sales, the auction house have a hard as it is with the travellers there are often fights there too. The travellers often take no notice of the auction house and pretty much do what ever they want, ie 40odd men stood in the ring, really tall heavy men on little 11hh ponies, no hats, saddles that are made of 2x4, bits 2" too big, blue pipe is common in the ring, ponies ridden up and down the lanes in-between the pens, the list goes on.

the selfish part of me is so very glad that there are no horse sales places near me! i would be there every time and would be devastated. was at one as a child and never got over it, glad i was a kid and prob missed a million things to see (not for the better).

I've got 4 that are by me, 2 are fab, 1 is even the best in country, the other holds breed sales, sport horses, blood stock. The other 2 deal with the bottom end of the horse world, it is sad to see but the meat man picks most up, so at least you knowvthey won't be suffering for much longer.

I've been following EMW's comments all day on facebook, heartbreaking! Sad thing is I paid £20 for a toy rocking horse for the baby from Asda last night, how sickening is it that toys cost more than the real thing!

The breeders need to be controlled, if they are breeding these animals for meat (which is essentially what they are doing) then DEFRA need to step in and apply the same controls and restrictions that beef, pork and sheep farmers are governed by. These animals need to be protected by the same laws that protect meat animals.

I really don't know where it is going to end, the charities are overwhelmed as it is and cannot afford to rescue all of them, the breeders will just carry on breeding and the ponies will continue to suffer. Those poor babies that haven't had any life at all! I can cope with breeding them for meat (just about, difficult to get past the fact they are horses) but let them spend their short lives in lush green fields with ample feed, shelter from the elements and vet care when needed. I am ashamed to belong to a so called intelligent species!

It needs more licenced Horse Slaughterers - Knackermen to step in and start culling the poor sods like the Gentlemen featured on Open Country, Radio 4 a few months ago, who was culling ponies on Dartmoor. And When are the RSPCA (An Organisation I have no time for Pseudo Political) and the other so called "welfare" groups going to step up to the line and and actually doing what they claim to be for "ANIMAL WELFARE" and not just collecting funds. And it is about time the POLICE started to sort out the ever increasing problems arising from the travelling community who dont actually want to go anywhere, and just blight the lives of the poor people who live near their camps.
I eat meat and have no problem with horses being sold for meat but the trade should be regulated by DEFRA the same as Cattle Sheep & Pigs, with heavy fines and or Imprisonment, for people who dont abide by the Rules.

Hear, Hear!

It's horrific.

Is there anything I can do to help stop it? Is there a charity that actually does good, or anything like that that needs support?

J&C

There are a few charities but they can't take them all.

For example the hay on wye foals has though 400 lots. A large number of these lots are for 5 or so ponies. Pretty much all of the unreg'd ones go for meat.

This is how travellers make money. Those poor ponies at the side of the road are being fattened up for meat and then put through the auctions for dead weight. So for a start noboody controls these poor animals. There is a traveller camp near us and there are loads of ponies just tethered next to the caravans so who do they get away with it when keeping horses is so strict due to disease potential? These camps have around 70 caravans on them.

Its the age old argument do you go buy a poor animal to fuel their trade when you dont agree with the way they care for their animals?

the whole things a terrible mess. Kind hearted people go nd buy a few to rescue them but it justs help keep the thing gong. It needs buyers to stop buying
i've heard even the meat man isnt tqking them all now there are so many. Maybe getting it all in the TV would help and cause an outcry.

What we need to do is keep pestering the WHW and the RSPCA about this. Never mind that they wont do much initially. if all those who witness something amiss at the sales immediately tell these organisations especially using a camera phone thingy keep emailing writing phoning. eventually they will have to take note, its like the horse transport thing in europe, something will eventually be sorted .

Poor innocent souls, I hope fate will be kind to them and their suffering will be short. I just don't see how the bottom of the market can ever be regulated, only thing that may stop overbreeding is if there's no buyer at all, if the meat men arent buying all of these that might actually get the point across, money talks and that's about all that does

yesterday there wasn't ANY Welfare presence..only the great market Stalwarts EMW!!..Who are bloody volunteers!!

NO RSPCA
NO MARKET WELFARE OFFICER
NO AHO
NO VET
NO TS

NO-ONE!!!!

There wasn't any "resueing" going on yesterday

4 well known Dealers bought many..one, a Midlands dealer bought 20
and 2 well known buyers for a north west Abattoir bought in excess of 60 ponies..not the dregs either..many were purchaced for over £150..anything below £50 they weren't interested in..the price of Horsemeat must be making a good pay day for them.

In that case, surely all the rules have been broken and no market should be sanctioned that don't have these in place. I thought it was animal welfare law that they had to be covered, obviously I'm wrong or even worse that the powers that be don't care anyway.
