Hardly unexpected really but Rosie has just started her first season at 10 months old. I phoned the vets today and tried to book her in for spaying. I am absolutely certain that I have read on here and when I talked to the vet when she had her jabs that they would spay when she came in season - I particularly noted this because Flyn is entire.

But it seems I was wrong  I have phoned a couple of vets and none of them will do it until 3 months after her first season. They explained that it is a routine procedure and they would not put any risk to a dog performing this procedure whilst in season due to the risk of extra bleeding :(

This means that I have to keep the two apart - which at the moment to me, seems almost impossible. Not worried about Flyn, he can stay in the house during the day whilst Toby and Rosie go out in the kennels but Rosie will get extremely upset about this - she is practically glued to Flyn's side.

I have no idea how I will manage this from 4pm onwards when all the dogs come into the house for the evening. Its a small house and impossible to shut one room off really apart from the sitting room, I will have to keep one shut in there :(

This is going to be a nightmare and I am dreading it. If we end up with sprollie puppies you will all lynch me and hound me out of AAD for life

Sorry, just had to get this off my chest!

All tips, advice, slapped wrists whatever welcome - please. At the moment Flyn doesn't seem particularly interested apart from the odd sniff. What days during her season will she be most receptive?

Anyone want an in season collie puppy for a couple of weeks?

Arggghhhhhhh........HELP!!!!

The vets are right I'm afraid, 3 months after season is the best time to spay.
Can you get someone to look after your entire dog for 3 weeks, it will be a
nightmare as even if you keep them apart he will cry to get to her.

I have just had a female rescue in here in season (she was handed in 2 days before she came in) and I had 2 entire boarders and had no mishaps even with me standing out guarding whilst they where at the toilet and she remained crated whilst I was not here in a seperate room, so its not impossible to prevent this, I would be horrified if my 10 month old bitch was caught and would not for safety and her well being go through with it, she would be done even if caught simples! which can be done from 4 weeks after them catching, are any of them crate trained? there is still risk of them getting together even through a crate but much less than no crate.
Cn dog stay in kennel until she is out of season and she stay indoors and be crated when u are out or vice versa?

I though you where getitng her done a month back?

I have known of bitches mate and conceive on the 7th day of season and on the 25th, so you really cannot rely on watching her for just a few receptive days. Agree a crate is the best way to go if you have one, otherwise it is just going to be a case of playing musical dogs. I managed with a stud dog and 3 bitches, you just have to be very careful, and don't be fooled by Flyn not showing interest, some males can be very sneaky.:D

Thank you all so much for replying - I really needed to discuss this with someone!

Cayla - I didn't get her spayed earlier because everyone told me not to have her spayed until her first season!! Gah!!

I would be horrified if my 10 month old bitch was caught and would not for safety and her well being go through with it, she would be done even if caught simples!
Please explain a bit more - if she got caught, what would you do? Insist the vet spays her?

Why I ever let my son get a collie bitch is beyond me! What an idiot I am :(

Yes, I do have a crate and it is permanently in the boot of the car so they are all used to being in it. And, Rosie slept in it at night when she first came.

I will just have to be super strict and threaten the children with the worst thing I can think of to make them be damned sure they shut the door after them!

Do not panic...just take your entire male down to the vets for a hefty shot of TARDAC..this will stop him even thinking about sex for six weeks, and by her 10..14 days it will be well in effect if you do it pronto.:D

It is not a good idea to spay during a season as the uterus is engorged ; therefore bleeding badly is more likely. Spays done to rescues whilst in whelp, although I can see the reasons clearly, are in my opinion barbaric.

Sorry Im crap at quoting the exact line....but yes she would be spayed in pup exactly 4 weeks after her season, this can be done, but not the neutering in season as the blood supply is the risk factor.
We have spayed plenty of rescues when pregnant "im sure I was called a murderer on here" at some stage for mentioning it:rolleyes: but hey, im a big girl, bring it on:rolleyes::D not sure how i could be called a murder when I have saved thousands of dogs from death (but that is a whole other argument) not aimed at you Ravenwood:)

Could you always make sure the spaniel is kenneled when u are out and tell the kids not to let him indoors, then let him in when u are in and crate one when they are unsupervised, also bitch spray may help to mask her smell, or if she would wear those bitch knickers things it could act as a "chastity belt":D

The tardac could be an option, but have still seen dogs catch a bitch when having the injection.
I think it more barbaric to put a 10 month old bitch through whelp and possibly lose her (but we all have our own opinions/priorities.

Thank you! I have not heard of that but will ring the vets tomorrow morning and ask about it - sounds perfect!!

Please think of me tomorrow whilst I am out on the open moors, working Toby and Flyn on the shoot in the pouring rain and gale force winds!! hey ho - at least Rosie will be safe in her kennel!! :o

LMAO - bitch knickers? OMG - I better get surfing the net and get some of those just to be on the safe side!!!

So what with Tardac, bitch spray and bitch knickers (:D) There may be a good chance that a litter of sprollie puppies will be saved from this world!!

I just kept mine in separate runs or one in the house, one outside, until B was neutered.
Wee tart would stand for him, eurgh :p

As mentioned on another thread, I've heard of dog and bitch in a tie through a chain link fence, a dog who ate through two doors to get to a bitch and one that got out of his run, over a roof, in to the bitch and back again, not even time for a cigarette :p

Good dose of Tardac and he`ll just snore through the whole thing. How very uncomfortable tying through a chain link fence must be..but my tiny mind finds it impossible to work out "the mechanics" of that one.
One of our local farm collies did ,unseen, jump a stable door ..mate a bulldog, and leg it home afterwards..still unseen. The deed was only discovered when the bulldog had a caeser and delivered nine beautiful puppies..all of which were black and white and typical collie marked. Everyone BUT the owner found it extremely funny!

I did come accross a JR in the middle of the road once..he had a happy grin on his face and was" attached " to a border collie bitch.Did wonder if it was a "vertical take-off" or what.Very funny ..nearly went into the hedge.:D:D

I have a spare crate of you need it.

Not sure but I did hear bitches could have a jab to prevent her season but don't know if it would stop her ovulating once in season ( sorry)

Can I also ask what maybe a dumb question but would it not be simpler to get boyo the chop? Although I guess he is entire for a jolly good reason.

Good luck with your musical dogs sorry I can't offer to look after one for a few weeks but we have a houseful at the moment and a very in your face in season bitch ;D
