There was a little scotty dog in a parked car today.
The front windows were opened to about three inches, but i could see he was hot and panting.
As i was hovering by the car, having a look, a woman came up and stood behind me.
I said , is it your dog? i was a bit worried he was too hot.
She said in a very snotty voice, the windows are open, can't you see? I said well he still looks too hot, and then walked on.
Her and her husband were eating ice creams outside, and i felt like saying to her, well you sit in there with the windows nearly closed for a while, then tell me your not to hot !
I was'nt rude , just a bit concerned.
If i had known that the owners were really close by, i would'nt have worried so much.

Was i wrong in saying something ?

Maybe it will make them think next time they stuff their face when the dog is cooking in car.You were right to say something but Im non confronttional too so dont know what i would have done :(

You were right to say something. I don't understand why they didn't have the dog out of the car with them if they were sat right there stuffing their faces with icecream!!

I am not known for my politness :D but i had my grandaughter with me, so could'nt go into full blown rant.

I spotted a springer spaniel in the back of a hatchback car at a garden centre,

The car had a dog guard so the dog was squissed against the back window, the front windows were open about half an inch, the car was in full sunlight on a boiling hot day.

I told the owners of the garden centre and she was mad and went off to look for the owners, I couldn't stay there as I would have done damage

What is wrong with people?

No you were not wrong to say something, it's one of the things that really pee me off, ignorant stupidly thick owners cooking their dogs.I found a elderly GSD bitch panting like mad in a small hatchback in Tescos car park last summer, only one front window was open 1 "
Poor dog looked distressed. As I was peering in the window, right on cue a police van drew up to park nearby, I approached the female officer who came and had a look, agreed with me and she said STUPID BLOODY OWNERS AGAIN and went in to Tescos to do something about it, hats off the her!
As I was waiting for my mum in the car (I had my 2 dogs with me at the time) and all the windows open in my 7 seater Maverick as well as my door open wide, they were still panting a bit so you can imagine how hot it was in that little hatchback with 1 window open 1".
The lady who owned the car came back after a while, I said to her about the dog, the reply was"Oh, it's not my dog, I'm looking after it for a friend, I didn't realise it would get that hot" she carried on fiddly around with her shopping bags instead of opening up all the windows immediately, the poor dog still had to wait, she then shut the car up again and went off to take her trolley back!
By the time she got back I was shouting at her OPEN the ******* windows you stupid woman.
Just after she left the police officer came back out and said she'd got them to put it over the shops tannoy but the woman failed to respond!
She said she's run her reg number through the pnc to see who she was and maybe go and have a word, result!
It happens all the time apparently, poor dogs!

I hate when people do that! I saw a dog in a carpark which serves about 8 shops with no windows open. It wasn't a particularly sunny day but was still warm. As the dog wasn't baking in there, I settled for leaving a note on their windscreen! There's no need in most cases to leave a dog in the car while you go shopping!

Just out of interest, if you see a dog in obviose distress in baking hot car, and there is no one around to help, what can you do?
Phone the police? Dog warden? or smash a window and help the dog yourself!

Depends, if I saw a dog in great distress then I would probably try to find the owner first but my instinct would be to smash the window if the dog had passed out and worry about the irate owner afterwards.
The police is the next option if the dog is still conscious but by the time they might be able to get there it could be dead, if there's a 999 call to say a mugging or RTA I know where their priority would be, they may not have the man (or woman) power to attend at peak times. Once we called them out to a elderly day centre I used to work at whilst we were chasing a burglar across the car park and down the road, no police apppeared and they rang back after 20 mins asking us " as he has gone now, do you still want us to attend" !
I'd be interested to know what others would do about a dog in a hot car?
Oz :)

Protocol suggests you ring RSPCA,dog warden and local police station-But not 999? :o

However when a friend and I saw a dog collapse in a car and begin to fit I did happen upon a "half charlie" that was launched through the rear door window.:o
Dog was dragged out, across carpark to nearest vet(yep parked outside the vets!) where he was seen to immediately.
Owner came out from another building attached to the vets half hour later. She was met by a vet, a local police officer and a visiting RSPCA inspector.
Seems she had been inside sitting a job interview......as a vet nurse:eek:
Needless to say...she didnt get the job and also recieved a warning from the police and RSPCA.
Dog thankfully recovered but I always wonder what the ******* she was thinking?
And I wasnt given any garage bills for the window, and it was suggestd by the police officer that mayb a passing "yoof" caused the damage ;)

Not suggesting i would dial 999, but local police.
I really aught to put the local dog wardens number in my phone.
Our field is next to the local car park, and you do see some dogs left in their cars, but not often.
I don't know why anyone takes their dog out for the day just to leave it in the car.
Our village is very dog friendly, most of the pubs/ cafe's allow dogs , so no excuse really.
We have been out for the day with our dogs, and if we go in somewhere and find they don't allow dogs, we find somewhere else.

Yep, shopped people to car parking wardens/guards before, and also took a bottle of water down to a foxhound going mad in a car down the road, owner did appear and said the dog was an escape artist hence window open only a tiny bit.
If people are offended, tough! Had experience of dogs dying in hot cars and it is not pleasant.

I came out of Asda once and saw a black lab in the back of a car panting, I went straight back in, I'd take a photo of the car so was able to give the customer services the registration and they announced it over the tannoy, I went back out to check the dog, got in my car and waited, I was chicken and didnt' say anything when they came out to their car but at least I'd stopped the dog suffering any more.

Look what happened to that police dog, it doesn't take long for them to get overheated even with windows open, if there's no breeze thats not going to help !

I carry a load of these with me...yes I am that sad but I really don't give a sh**. http://www.dfordog.co.uk/images/hotdogs_poster02.pdf

I put them on the windscreens of cars when the weather isn't so hot they are at immediate risk but as suffering, for anything else I ring the RSPCA and the Police, done it a number of times now and will continue to do so until people learn.

You are well within your right to dail 999 it is an emergency, they will then request you contact the RSCPA also 0300 1234 999, and it's usually them who will attend but if unable the police are very good..well in my area they are!

I don't get leaving dogs in cars I would never do a shop with my lot in the car. Ok I would pop in for milk but that's it. No one has an excuse to leave dog in car for mire than an hour take the dog home. I'm also paranoid leaving dog in car re being stolen.

I watched a programme that included the RSPCA patrolling a showground car park and was really surprised at just how quickly cars heat up and how much hotter it is inside the car as opposed to outside. Not making excuses, it was always just common sense to not leave dogs in cars on hot days but it made me think twice about walking past a car that does have dogs in them.

My dogs are crated at the yard so left in the shade with all doors open and sun roof if I am on board. However if its really hot, will drag the crate into the barn as even taking those actions isn't enough to keep the car at a moderate temperature (and the dogs always have water too).

That RSPCA programme finished with them finding a dog that had died in the car. They did break in but were too late. Turns out the owners had gone to the show, then found they couldn't take their dog in so left it in the car .. for over FIVE hours.

I'd smash the window. No hesitation whatsoever.
