Well after over a year of batteling with the horrid one to get him to go forwards instead of napping and trying to ride him through all the bucking, rearing and spinning he threw something totaly new at me on Sat.
It was a lovely day and my OH was out for the day so I desided to take him hacking. Off we pootled and were having a lovely ride in the forest. We had afew trots and canters and Herbs seemed to be enjoying himself :) He was being alittle odd and spooking at stuff but I just put that down to the fact he had had a tractor driving up and down outside his stable all morning and maybe that had upset him alittle. We were nearly at the cattle grid at the end of our track home. I was riding through some braken when I heard some horses trotting along the track below us. I didn't think much of it and just spoke to Herbs calmly and asked him to walk on. Suddenly he did a HUGE leap followed by an almighty buck. (Nothing new there  ) But then he bolted  He just took off through the braken and I had no brakes. I couldn't circle as we where to close to the road on one side and the other would have been twords the other horses. We carried on and I eventualy managed to stop him where the two tracks met. Once I pulled him up he was back to his normal ploddy self. It was soooooo embaressing though when we saw the other horses. It was two blokes on big hunters. :o They must have thought it very odd seeing me out of control on a 12.2hh forester. :o
There where people everywhere on the forest so I desided it was best to just take him home. :( On Sun I lunged him and made him do loads of canter till he was nakered :p.
Today I took him out in the forest again and took him down the same track he bolted down on Sat. He was ok today so hopefuly it was a one off.
Just when I thought this pony was finaly going to start behaving himself he goes and shows just why he is still the horrid one  ;) :p

He does like to keep you on your toes, doesn't he?! Glad to hear that he was okay next day. A lot of the horses I know are feeling a bit lively at the moment. Must be something to do with the nice sunny crisp weather!

LOL he certanly does :p :D But I still love him. I also think the spring grass may have something to do with it. Our grass is deff starting to grow despite the frost we've been having every morning

Well done on stopping him and on being brave enough to go down the same track again! Sounds like you did all the right things and I suppose for a pony that refused to budge, running off is an improvement!

Well done for heading back again!
The smaller ones are always the worst ;)
The horses on our yard are all a little 'fresh' too. I rode a friends 16.2hh ISH on Sunday and even though we were in the indoor school, we had a few interesting spooks, and little 'kick-bucks' (not quite a buck but something!) here and there - even at the hay bales which we had ridden past at least 20 times previous!
Think it must just be the weather or the spring grass coming through
K x

Ron does silly things when the spring grass starts growing too.... like sunday - my sister and I went out for a hack together and Ron bounced all the way round and every time we went to trot he went from jigjog to extended trot

don't worry about it, he's obviously feeling well, and he's still on the right track!

Ha ha ours are all fresh at the moment, think they're feeling the beginnings of spring and enjoying a little sun on their backs! Well done tho x

Well done Laura for getting him back out on the same track again, that took courage on your part and on his too I'd have said. Lots of horses seem to be feeling "well" at the moment.

Can he have a new nickname instead of Horrid Herbie? Running off aside he has been a lot better lately... New beginning and all that?

Thanks guys for all the continued support. :) I realy do hope this was a one off as if he makes a habbit of it my OH's daughter won't be able to ride him anymore :( For some reason she's desided Merryns to big and she only wants to ride him in the school. She feels safer on Herbie out on the forest  I tried to explain to her Merryn was sooooooo much safer than Herbs but she thinks because he's smaller Herbs is safer  Funny how childrens minds work isn't it I've tried to explain that the smaller they are the worse they tend to be but I don't think she believes me ;)

Cheeky little Herbs!!

I hacked Belle out yesterday for first time in ages (with another horse, Belle behind). She has decided that trotting on the road is far too boring and she would far rather try and canter... excellent! :p
