Poor Tarka ( 5 year old black lab) Dad has just rushed him to the vets.
He is drooling, very cold, fully concious but did not want to move we had to carry him to the car.
He went out for a walk this morning and was totally normal.

Any ideas? could it be rat poison? I shouldve gone to the vet with them, but have to work at 2

I just got message from Christmas_derby... Tarka had his Spleen removed and is recovering from the op well as expected. She will give you full info once she's back from her shift.

thank you

My God that sounds like Matty 3 weeks ago how spooky is that. Matty is now much much better so hopefully Tarka will soon be home and feeling his self again. Lots of good vibes going his way...we all know how worrying it is when our babies aren't well.

Thanks guys, not heard yet from the vets this morning but as far as I know he is OK.
They found a growth in his spleen which had split and it was bleeding into his stomach, so that is why the spleen was removed.
The growth to the spleen was caused by some sort of blow- ?we think that he was probably kicked by on of the horses as he was always getting under their feet and then one day he was refusing to go near them and has been ever since poor chap ( this was about 2 months ago).
Vets say that he will manage fine without a spleen?

Years ago a friend had a top winning GSD who had to have his spleen removed. He took a while to recover but was able to carry on being shown with success. I am sure Tarka will be absolutely fine without his spleen.

Matty had her spleen removed...because there was a huge growth on it which had split and she was basically bleeding to death, so it seems these two dogs are suffering the same way. However Mattys was cancer so hopefully Tarka hasn't got that problem. Is your vet doing a biopsy to check? Anyway Matty is completely back to her normal self so it would appear a spleen is not necessary for a dog!

Wow so this is exactly the same problem in both! What type is Matty?
Yes Tarka's growth is having a biopsy.. will be interesting to see what it is.
Glad that Matty is back to norm- but what about the cancer- was it just in her spleen or had it spread?

Matty is a Rhodesian Ridgeback and she is 8 years old. The vet checked her whole abdomen and couldn't find anything else in there, she also had her lungs x-rayed and they are clear. However, this type of cancer is fast spreading and with her bleeding it is more than likely it will spread. We have to go for ultra sound scans at the end of December to see if anything has appeared. If we are lucky she will be fine for many years if not....well we will have to see. Good luck to Tarka hope he is feeling better.
