So my YM had a lovely message in the post this morning. Basically there is some private land down the bottom of the farm lane where there are hound kennels. They are nothing to do with the yard other than they are next to each other.
My YM just had a letter with their name on it saying that if the hounds are not removed from the land then the horses will pay for it!
Obviously the police are being contacted but Im now very worried for my horses. You hear some very nasty horror stories about horses and hounds being poisoned or fed food with things like razor blades in them :(
Maybe Im being totally OTT but still feeling pretty scared. Not sure what the point of this post is other than to vent

I'm not quite clear on your post - although the situation sounds horrid.

So does your YM own the land adjacent to the kennels?

And the letter writer wants the hounds removed from the kennels? Or your YM's land?

There are some very strange people in the world and none so as anonymous letter writers.......

Sorry Im in a bit of a tiz this morning. Basically the kennels or located at the bottom of the farm lane, directly next to the farm's land, but the kennels are on private land not owned by the farm. However the letter writter seems to be under the impression that the kennels are on the farm's land and has threatened the horses on the farm if the hounds are not "removed".

Can liveries and YO chip in for some CCTV? Or a dummy camera and CCTV signs? Perhaps horses should come in at night for a few weeks in case this nutter does actually try something?

What Mince Pie said and maybe also a sign on the gate at the bottom of the farm lane (if it doesn't have one, then it needs one) making it clear that the yard has CCTV and guard dogs and has nothing to do with the kennels next door.

Hopefully the police will take it seriously.

Ah thank you for explaining :D NOFA indeed! Mince Pie I believe the YM has phoned the police and they are calling later today for a chat. I think bringing them in for a week or two is a good idea x

I wonder why the nutters think hounds should be "removed" and where to? I wonder if they are new to the countryside and object to the noise, rather than just anti hunting.

Hounds are quite vocal around feeding time...... - I love it but I can see that people who don't like being woken to the sounds of hounds singing might object. Obviously not animal lovers however.....

I hope the police will take it seriously, it sounds like they are if they're coming for a chat!

Not to frighten you, but I did read a story today of hounds being shot in their kennels and a letter being left saying they won't be able to hunt now! I'm not sure it was in the UK, but still. Absolutely sickening. I hope all is well and it was an empty threat!

Faracat no they are always secure in the kennels apart from when they are let out in a run and exercised.
Chan I really hope they take it seriously. Either way in not taking any chances with my horses.

If it is antis, I really must be missing the point. How on earth could someone whose plight it is to save animals, by harming/ killing others!

My thoughts exactly. I totally respect the opinion of those who disagree with hunting, but I can not understand the thought pattern of protesting harm to one animal by harming another

I think the idea is that the antis think the only thing the hunters care for that the antis can harm with minimal personal risk are the animals. Thus attack the animals (which are also seen as enabling as you can't hunt without hound/horse) and the fear of losing such animals or just their loss with prevent recruitment of new people into hunting and dissuade those who already are

Edit - horses/dogs in stables/fields/kennels are also very easy to target because they spend a lot of time out alone without other people around. So those willing to make aggressive actions can do so with significantly reduced risk to themselves.

Ah OK, I read your OP the wrong way, I thought that they had escaped and were now on the letter writer's property and that the letter writer wrongly thought that the horse yard owned the hounds. I see that the real situation is far more sinister. I hope that the Police were helpful.

Who ever threatened the hounds/horses is clearly not an animal lover. Could be an anti as not all antis care about animals, some of them are anti for social/political/class reasons (as the average anti still thinks it's 1816 and struggles with the concept that plenty of folk who hunt have working class roots).

It seems the hounds are the initial target and the horses are secondary. So it could be someone who has a hatred of dogs (yes, I known they're hOUNds). If there are no residential houses close to the kennels then it can't be a disgruntled neighbour fed up with the noise. Are there any religious buildings close to the kennels? Certain "religious types" have "issues" with dogs and there have, in other areas of the country, been cases of these "religious types" poisoning dogs and/or attacking their owners.

Keep us posted and I hope the police catch the swine.

Some "people" are sick. What good will harming the horses do, when it is the hounds they clearly have a problem with? Maybe your local paper can print the letter and point out that the horses and the hounds are not in any way connected. It could be noise, next doors dogs are always barking and it drives us mad, but it would be pointless to threaten their mates horse because of it! Hope the person is found soon. Next doors dogs (4 of them) are always barking but when someone broke in did they make a sound? NO!!

It will have been the local hunt sabs. They are gearing up for hunt season. Such animals lovers - want all hounds and horses killed to save a fox!

Such hypocrisy - to protest the harm of one animal by harming another. Agree its most likely local hunt sabs gearing up for the upcoming season.
Contact the police and make sure you take extra precausions with the horses. Maybe get some cameras up around the paddocks if there aren't already.

Half the "religious" types you describe are involved with dog fighting around my way. So owning a dog doesn't seem to bother them. Mind you, neither does gambling which I thought they weren't supposed to indulge in either.

How about some big signs up for a couple of weeks saying "the hounds are nothing to do with this yard or the owners of this yard". I feel for you. We have our horses down a quiet lane and the other week there was a van that just kept going up & down. When challenged they said they were looking for so & so - obviously complete bull****.

I was into paranoid gate shutting, baling twine knots around all gates, 'obstacles' left in places people could sneak in etc etc. "luckily" I think they were after stuff they could quietly steal rather than horses but it gave me a few sleepless nights.
