I was delayed getting home last night and OH said he would go down to feed Ellie for me. I was a bit dubious as he would have to put her headcollar on (something he has never done) and get her out of the gate while keeping Blue in. I told him to go ahead and said I would be there as soon as I could to put Ellies rug on.

I drove up imagining all kinds of horrors, had he managed to keep Blue in? Had he remembered to shut the first gate or had he left it open and let the horses out onto the road? I drove up, no flashing lights, no loose horses, and walking up the drive I saw Blue in the field and OH holding Ellie who was just finishing her tea and was all rugged up

OH hadn't crossed the surcingles and had done the leg straps up wrong, but other than that he had done a grand job

He said putting on the rug was like a puzzle from the Krypton Factor, he had to lay it on the ground and work out which bits went where before he put it on Elle, but he had done it, bless him.

All I have to do now is to work out how to get him to poo pick and I have my own groom

He seems to be getting more and more into it lately. He rang me one day to say Ellie seemed bit lame to him so he picked her feet out to check there was nothing in them - this from a man who this time last year told me if I got a horse he wanted nothing to do with it!

I got back from a competition the other day, my OH drives the wagon and calls the dressage tests for me. Anyway, my friends horse had his rug over his head in the field and wasn’t too happy about it so i ask OH to drop me at the top so i could run to the field and to back the horse box down and i would be there in a min. When i got back to the wagon my horse had been unloaded was in his stable with his boots off and OH was sweeping out the wagon.

I was only gone 5 mins max i couldn’t believe it bearing in mind my lad is 18hh and although very good he does like things done a certain way otherwise he gets scared.

I was very proud of both of them.

Yep, I had one of those ... he loved doing all the "stable management" stuff and quite enjoyed going to a riding school etc.
Things changed when he got his own horse - it was all a bit too much for him (responsibility etc.) and he gave up after about 6 months. Shame.
Funny thing is, he is now trying to wiggle his way back into doing groom's duties for me and my friends (?)

What happens next is they get the bug and you end up with hairy clydesdales who they love more than you.

Actually it is very nice having an OH that loves horses and is nearly as daft about spending your life with them as I am.

My OH says he hates horses, every now and then he'll have an urge to get on and canter one though.

But he really likes things like... fencing, fixing, Or anything you could class MANLY!

I even got told this morning not to move, or do anything with the electric fencing as hes got something in mind that he wants to do later on today!! Ok i wont!

Very handy! he'll be driving me to horse shows soon, as hes getting his lorry licence!

Brilliant! I can just see that happening with my OH!

Mine helped me the other morning and he kept saying, whats next, so said, fill haynets, soak and leave to drain....

I was rushing with the mucking out and he walked past and said is this enough- i had a quick look - it was packed full and said yup (it was VERY early in the morning!).

When I finished, i went to do the nets, and he had filled with straw and soaked them

Bless!! Easy mistake I suppose!! xx

I am hoping that when we move and have them at home he will be more involved... any training tips?!!!!

xx

After 13 years together my OH can just about put a headcollar on and still can't tie a quick release knot (and he was in scouts!) He'll put him out for me, and tow the trailer(although I prefer to do it myself as he drives too fast) but that's it.

He's never quite got over the shame of trying to show me that my very bolshy old Sec D, just took the p*** out of me because I was a weak and feeble woman and that with his brute strength and physicality he would be able to stop him legging it wherever he wanted when he was being led... Cue 14.1hh pony tanking across field with 16 1/2 stone of rugby player being dragged behind and one owner nearly wetting herself at the gate.

ETS Sorry I'm doing him a disservice, he will also fill waterbuckets and make up a feed, but won't do hay as it "makes him itchy"

I don't get how being stuck in the mud under a pile of about 16 bodies is ok but a bit of hay cannot be tolerated!

Mine tried to take off Belle's rug once but forgot the legstraps, cue Belle shooting around her stable in a total panic with me and OH trapped in the corner as she went round and round. Finally calmed her down enough to unstrap it and get it off, but he'll not go near her rugs now, unless I've undone everything.

Found him trying to put her bridle on once and he had the bit in her mouth but couldn't figure out the straps and I found them wandering across the yard, Belle leading him by her bridle!

They are sent to try us

Watch out. That's how I started.

I come from a family that was in racing for 40 years and had no interest in horses. My parents borrowed a pony when I was 8 and tried to get me interested but it didn't work. Eventually they gave up trying.

My partner had a horse when I started going out with her and I didn't want to get involved. It started with little lifting and shifting jobs, stacking hay etc. Next came the requests to hold the mare while various tasks were carried out by my partner. Followed by holding her for the farrier, vet etc if my partner was at work. This lead to riding, then breeding 2 foals from the mare, and breaking and schooling and now I ride more than she does.

Be warned

Bless him.....

My OH is now fully trained.....he has his own horse now, and this is a bloke who had only ever been near a horse at a footie match until he met me....

He will do everything ( for 3 horses) at a push.....usually when I have a hangover

........although generally I do everything because I'm quicker its nice to know if the [****] hit the fan there would be someone to do them.......

haha I love this thread

My hubby brought me a pressie yesterday as I needed cheering up, he told me to shut my eyes and put my hands out.........expecting a bar of my favourite chocolate I looked down and he had brought me a "Stable Lickit" for one of the horses haha
