Why is it that people seem to think they are an expert at riding looking after horses?! They must be right and you must follow what they think!!

Tell me does anyone else have this problem with 'experts'?!

Erm

Not had this personally but everyone is an expert when it comes to their own horse IMO. Afterall who knows their horse better than them

Yes I am having it a bit at the moment. When I ride I should do it 'this way or that way' I should use 'this spray not that spray', I should change my 'bridle - saddle - rug' Told them to p*ss off today!

aaaah!

No sorry haven't had this either. I gather you are having probs with someone though? Maybe you should try the old 'thanks for the info, I'll bear it in mind' and do what you want trick

Oh dont worry weve all had the 'experts' I think at one time or another! Just ignore them and enjoy what you do..it works in the end x

I think that is probably the best way to deal with them, to be quite honest. Either that or ignore them, but telling them to p1ss off must be so much more fulfilling

.

Yes it was rather! Although I don't want to start making enemies. Nonetheless - I do not seek approval and if I wanted their opinion I'd give it to them!

Seriously though, the nod and continue to do what I want will be the way forward.

i know how you feel, i have 2(1 is 16 the other 19) at my yard that think there are experts. it p__s me off aswell.

Oh yes!!!
You should get so and so to ride your pony! (I am perfectly fine riding my OWN pony)
You should have your mare in/ how can you leave your mare out all winter with no rug! (she is a ISH and in foal doesn't like being stabled and a warm horse)
Why are you feeding her 1/2 a bale a night! (said brood mare is 17hh)
That horse shouldn't have a rug on! (just bathed the day before a show and he's coloured)

And there only the one's that spring to mine if you give me 5 mins I could have a list as long as my arm. Funny thing is I am an experienced groom, it's how I make my living!

They leave me alone at the yard, but I know what you mean. We have someone at the yard, 1st time owner, who is an expert on everything - there is a new family at the yard with a lovely little horse for their daughter (1st pony type) and they constantly interfere or wait until they have left and inform the rest of the yard of their opinion on how everything they do with this horse is wrong. As Grumpy_Herbert says, smile, nod and ignore it! The chances are these experts are making up for their own lack of knowledge by trying to make someone else appear stupid.

I know what you mean, Im happy for any help and advice when I ASK but not when I DON'T.
It winds me up soo bloody much,
I used to have an AI criticise me constantly, and always putting me down. I never really saw her ride. But I saw pictures the other day, OMFG she was obviously putting me and my young boy down cos she's an Effing lash up!!!! She used to say how crap I am at jumping Bear, bearing in mind he was novice and Ive never really jumped. I asked her on several occasions to get on him and jump and she'd just say ''no way''!
Bear is a real sweetie! My friends novice daughter is riding him ATM and he's given her so much confidence, so up yours you silly cow!! HA!!!!!

Phew, little rant over!
I don't blame you for telling them to pi$$ off.

Yes! It happened to me to day - similar criticisms. I don't want to be an olympic rider - and if I try out something new on my horse I will be the judge of her progress not fatty go-nads and his expert opinions!!

Ahhhhh HHO is great - feeling better and calmer now knowing I am not the only one!

LOL!!!
I hate SJ but I thought we would give it a go at the local RC, hopefully we'll try doing novice WH this summer, so go swivvel know it all !!!!!!!

LOL This is great!

What I always find amusing with these types is when they imply that they can do something better than you and you let them try. Quite a few have come a cropper with my horses when I've done this, much to my amusement!

I know what you mean about self-appointed experts, but sometimes people are genuinely trying to help - doesn't mean they are right, of course, but maybe it's worth giving them the benefit of the doubt about their motives?

I think most, if not all, of us have met these irritating people. Just smile sweetly, say thnks, then ignore.

Cant say I have had this (they wouldnt dare

), but lots of other annoying stuff.

Next time they give you a lecture, say "Im so glad I've caught you ... Im having problems with Renvers and Travers - I seem to be getting the aids all mixed up - what would you suggest"
cool.gif

haha I like it!

I cannot just smile sweetly - I'm a lawyer and not bred for the softly approach.

I will probably be the discussion of the yard for a while - but any publicity is good publicity!

I think the horse world always has been and always will be the same, everyone sincerely believes their way is the best!
I tend to smile and not take offence.
Someone I know quite well is forever giving me snippets from mags about how to understand your horses and how to train them.
The person in question has great difficulty in even mounting their own horse as it refuses to stand still.
I wouldn't dream of telling her what my real opinion of her training methods are, I just thank her, read them (there may well be something beneficial in them) and keep stum...
I know for a fact within a month she will make a comment on how "lucky" we are that our own horses are so easy to train, she just can't see it's "how" we train them that works...
My advice is always listen, don't argue, then smile and go your own way.
It works for me

You must be successful in something otherwise they wouldnt be at you. Get used to it as you rise up the ladder - it gets even better

LOL at the 'p**s off'. I normally use the smile, ignore tactic, but on one occassion I snapped at said 'expert' "I know you think you are being helpful, but you're not'. Suffice to say that unless I have the need for information from said person (eg what time is XXX due to arrive, where is XXX) we don't talk!

I also think that man's best ever invention for the yard is the ipod! I switch mine on and can't hear the complete and utter b*ll*cks that come out of the mouths of the experts.

It has the added advantage that when people seeing you wearing one, they don't talk to you either!!

Yep - we've all had em. Usually I smile and say thank you but after having my own horses for 30 years think I'm the best person qualified to make a decision on what they need/don't need etc.

Try this one - once when I had a much younger female tell me what she thought I should be doing with my veteran cob who was then 34 yo, I smiled sweetly at her and replied "that my horse and I were out competing and seeing the world and gaining life's experiences whilst she was being potty trained". That shut her up as she was reknowned for acting the big I am.

I am always happy to give advice when asked. However, I will speak out if I think a horse's welfare is at stake and I make no bones about it but this is very rare.

I think most people mean well, just that some are not very tactful!
