Oh excited - Drag hunting, advice needed!

Im so excited, im finally having ago at drag hunting on the 19th October on there beginners meet. I've been intouch with them and they seem really friendly/helpful and i honestly cant wait.

The dress code is hunt dress and im going to need a black or navy jacket. Ive only ever shown my pony in afew m&m classes and ive only got a tweed. Anyway im looking at show jackets and there so many different types.

Do i need one with gold buttons, sliver buttons or jacket coloured buttons? Does it need to have a velvet collar or not? some of the jackets have abit of colour on the pockets, is this OK or does it need to be plan?

Im not planing on spending loads as this is likely to be a one off, but atleast ive got one, if its needed again and i dont know anyone i can borrow off.

Anyone know of any good shop sales/second places to look (im currently looking on ebay/preloved)
 
Needs to be plain, buttons blue or black the same as the coat. No bits of colour anywhere. white stock and stock pin. Ebay might be your friend, good luck and enjoy your day.
 
Very exciting! Definitely have a look at ebay, the plainer the jacket the better, shame you can't borrow one for your first time - you never know, you may get hooked and then have good reason to buy a new jacket! Have Fun.
 
You should be fine with just a smart tweed jacket. Especially so as it's a beginners meet.
I'd much rather see someone in a tweed than a cheap, paper-thin show jacket personally given the choice. If you still want a navy/black , go for as plain as possible (No bling!) And enjoy, it's meant to be fun :D
 
You will be better in tweed than a show jacket. The navy jackets for hunting are thick wool coats so quite different to a show jacket. It is acceptable to wear tweed and correct at this time of year.
 
Ditto Kat and simplyhunting- a tweed jacket will be fine, esp as it's your first time out and a newcomers day, lots of other people are likely to be in tweed too so you will fit right in. Hope you have a brill time! :)
 
I would just wear your smart tweed :) That's what I did as I only went out 3 or 4 times and have never needed a navy jacket and there were lots of others in tweed too :)
 
Oh, fantastic! ill put my tweed on, are you going to that meet?

Is there anything i need to know? (i know nothing about hunting/what expected) i believe its in 'legs' to give everyone chance to catch up, i was assured that i wouldnt get left behind!!

I wish i was going to one earlier, but i think its best to wait for the beginners first
 
You'll love it. Lots of 2ft jumps, all optional. A Master at the back to make sure no one gets lost. Just follow everyone else and never pass the person who will be pointed out to you at the meet as the Field Master. Remember his horse, because lots of people will be wearing red coats and the horse will probably be easier to distinguish. :)

'Field please' means 'follow me, now'

'Hold hard' means ' stop, now'

'Headland' means 'stick to the hedge or fenceline, don't go on the field/crops' pass any command you get like that back to anyone behind you.

Give way to hounds at all times. If one comes up behind you, call forward 'hound on the left/right' so people in front of you know.


It's polite to give way to all red coats and coloured collars, but not absolutely essential.

I might be there but more likely I'll be out on the Wednesday where my big brave boy will get bigger fences. Have a great time!
 
Well we went and it was fab! Flyer loved it. I wasnt brave enough to jump anything other than a ditch this time, but it was brilliant. I really want to go again!
