Mare done this overnight. They were all in a new field for a break from the mud at home, but I've walked them all back now as I can't see where she's done it. Safer at home I think. She's now shut in the shelter, and I'll be cleaning and bandaging twice daily for a bit... Just when it was looking like I could shorten my daily to-do list!
Vet friend looked at it and said that's the way to go, as once cleaned up it became clear there wasn't enough skin to suture back up. Hoping I can let her mooch back out with her friend once it starts to granulate

Ah, nightmare. These things always happen at the worst time, don't they? Your vet friend is right sometimes healing from the inside out is the only way. You've got a solid plan: clean, bandage, keep her quiet. Once that granulation starts, she'll be much happier back out with her friend. Hang in there.

Did your vet friend talk about clipping the area so it can be cleaned and examined properly?
She did that for me, so has seen a vet.
That's something I'd expect to need antibiotics and painkillers. I'd dress it with manuka honey as well - it did wonders for my big mare.
Have painkillers anyway, and antibiotic spray from farm. Honey will be something to add in future bandage changes, thanks!

I really REALLY recommend this stuff!

Go onto cases, my chap was the fourth photo down! He took the back of his knee out jumping out of his field over a hedge… we bandaged and he ended up with really bad lymphangitis… so took it all off and put this on twice a day and the progress made in a short time was incredible. All healed up & no white hair or granulated tissue.

Wow, thank you!
