Yesterday trotted my horse up in hand and he was sound first time in months .Hes been off with a splint and kick injury with the same leg .I lunged in the school and he was sound so decided to take him up for a ridden walk around one of our spare fields .He hasnt done any work for months as he is recovering from spavin op (jan)as well as above. He was really spooky reared bucked and tried to bolt and is now lame again ,hes lost all his confidence and was mega excited I think Ive really set him back with recovery. I thought the 8 weeks off with kick injury should have been enough as per vet advice but all the extra activity must have done some damage.

oh no!!!!! but then you could have waited another 2 4 or 6 weeks and it still might have happened just the dame, so dont blame yourself.......our only victory as humans is to prevent horses carrying out their suicide missions as far as I can see!!

There was a series of letters to the Editor in one of the quality daily papers not so long ago about the best definition of a lamb. I thought the runaway best was "The lamb is a creature that is born and then spends the rest of its life looking for ways to kill itself". I reckon this could equally apply to some neds lol!!!! Fingers crossed your ned makes a full recovery x

Just take it slower next time start with 5-10mins under saddle or inhand (depending on how you trust your boy) and build up 1 min ish every day while sound going back to 5-10mins if he goes unsound or you notice anything unusual about his movement. Hope your boys better soon, try applying some arnica gel which can help with bruising and cold bandage or hose to make sure there is no soft tissue damage hopefully will come sound again soon. Oh and don’t blame yourself it wont help your horsie.

A similar thing happened with my usually angelic mare when she tweaked a tendon in feb she had 10 days off on bute and box rest vet came out day 10 said all ok and start gentle work again walked her for few mins inhand in the school before jumping on and taking her out around the paddock for a walk and would you belive it a bloody roe deer jumped out in front of us and she then proceeded to buck and rear for about 5 mins I did everything I could but I was mainly trying to stay on I came in shaking but she was not lame however swelling and heat present next day so had vet straight out who diagnosed ruptured tendon and so we started 4 and a half months box rest! Just starting back now but so far so good, blamed my self for weeks but only started to be usefull once I got over feeling sorry for myself.

We had tendon injury last year plus other incidents trouble is you just cant help blaming yourself.
When I was cold hosing he panicked at hose and pulled a lump of wood of stable block which banged around his legs until I managed to catch him.Hes intent on crippling himself.Maybe Ill get his legs scanned again to make sure there isnt anything else going on the vet checked his legs but the suspensory is hard to diagnose if its under the knee.
Hope your horse comes sound.Did you have her on horsemart I recognise your sig I am sure I phoned up about her for my daughter and left a message. What a coincidence!!!!

That does make me feel a bit better ,I didnt ask him to rear or buck self inflicted injuries again.Maybe he has some kamokazi in him why do certain horses tend to be more injury prone and suicidal.

My horse had 12weeks box rest followed by restricted turnout in a tiny paddock last year when he fractured his cannon bone- when vet finally gave the all clear for 'proper' turnout in a big field....he went berzerk - full pelt galloping round - tail in the air ..the lot...and this was after calmers /acp and walking in hand...I was nearly being sick , couldnt watch...felt like passing out.......but he was ok, and I'm sure your lad will be too...what a nightmare for you

Im not sure what to do .
Have his legs scanned again incase its more than fracture with wooden plank incident or just give him extra time and go back to walking on the lunge in another week or so.The vet was out at the end of last month August and checked his tendons etc but the suspensory is behind the knee and wouldnt neccessarily show up without scan.If it was suspensory then he should have been horrendously lame and the vet would have picked it up.Wouldnt he?
Maybe like your boy he just needs longer for the fracture.I feel like Im going in circles here .Maybe Im looking for something thats not there.

calmer can take weeks to build up to the correct levels in the horses system to work to full effect (I am assuming you meant a feed additive calmer)
