So have been playing with the boys in harness and Fitz has taken to it like the proverbial duck to water. Quarrie is good too although a little more distracted by his nose.

I may have just signed up for a cani-cross-cross taster and a cani-hike-on the same day (one dog on each), with 30 mins to recover in between. I am not fit (understatement) and carrying too much weight. I fear my face will be red for a week! I am off this week so I can practise a bit. It'll be fun, right?

I fear running, breathing and not falling over while taking photos might be beyond me but I will try.


First rehearsal this morning-Fitz had a rather bemused trot/walk session (we're following couch to 5k training for starters) while I tested out my new runners. cracking day for it but the first run is always the easiest!

I wish we were nearer! I started to do the couch to 5k and actually really enjoyed it but then went over on my ankle (it is a weak spot after fracturing it years ago) and never got back into it. I think I need someone else to come too to motivate me!
 
I can shout 'hike' at you if you like :D

I used to love to run-didnt start until I was 31 and got to the point of running from 30-90mins at least 5 days a week. I only really run xc though, knees don't thank me for road running. My collie would come with me and loved it. I am not fast-ever (although faster with Quarrie on a harness ;) ). I fell out of the habit-horses at home and the setter was rubbish to run with frankly (gawd love him). I don't really have time to run, walk the dogs and deal with horses so dogs will have to lump it!
 
Are you off to Strathclyde Park on Sunday? You will love it!!

After much deliberation I joined the same club I suspect you are going to about a month ago. I was same, worried if I would be fit enough, if my mad lurcher would cope with all the other dogs 🙈 I have done a 1-2-1 and the block of 4 classes so far. I LOVE IT!

I am improving my fitness every week, trail running is soo different from the jogging I had been doing on paths etc. I have bought the dog her own special harness too so I can go out in my own time.

Don't worry about your fitness the people are so friendly and encouraging and only want to see you improve.

And the best part.....I have finally found something that tires the untireable Lola lurcher right out!!

yes I am and thank you for your lovely post :) I don't think I can make their evening classes as work is about 90mins away in the wrong direction but I hope to do some weekend ones.

Today the golden and I suffered a miscommunication when I was doing up my laces-he nutted me in the nose (he was mortified) and I saw stars for a bit! boofhead.

Nothing like a gundogs head!
The puppy headbutted me last week, well I punched myself as she hit my arm while wrapping a big parcel. My tooth went into my lip and I bled and bled. A man turned up to see my OH and I opened the door with a mouth full of blood and it runing down my chin! Sexy. :-) Had an attractive fat lip for a day or two as well.

Everyone is fed up hearing me go on about how much I am loving canicross 😂 if you can make any of the evening classes it's worth it great bunch make you very welcome!

Haha oh dear bless him least he noticed he had done it, my life is a series of miscommunications with the lurcher I am constantly torn between laughing at her and apologising for her asbo behaviour!!

My lurcher is the same, today she was chewing her deer antler and then threw it in the air, she has smashed the TV screen :-/

No blood drawn here but it does smart a bit, bless him-he spent the rest of the run checking in on me-he's got a big blooming' head though.

also, I've been running twice now and can't stop bloody eating!

Oh no! That is something lola would totally do! She's only managed to smash a lamp with a well aimed Kong so far! Nothing as expensive as a TV!

If you're Scotland, there's a big event on at Strathallan Castle this weekend - canicross & bikejor. We're having to miss it this year as am working, but it's a great event in a stunning location if you were interested in going along.

hi, yes I saw that on my FB feed thank you. Afraid I don't have the time this weekend but there's another later in the year in Ayrshire and hoping to get to that one.
 
oof, I have now sat down and may not get up again lol!

I decided to take Fitz on the cani-cross bit. Partly because I wanted to encourage him to run out front and take a bit of a pull (walking he does this in harness but when I run he's trotted politely) and partly because I thought he might be less excitable and strong than Quarrie. He was a complete star-got the hang of taking a pull up front, directions and going by other dogs very quickly and I think our paces are well suited-he was fab giving me a bit of help up the hills and not scaring me by going too fast down them. He was absolutely loving it and we had a lot of fun.Only one person knew what breed he is!

So then it was cani-hike. Quarrie was really great-polite with everyone and raring to go. We both found the pace a bit slow tbh, lots of dogs/handlers of different abilities but we got to practice commands and stuff so all good. He focuses much better when we run-when we walk his nose rules which is fair enough. He did it with his usual good natured happy face on and everyone loved him and asked what breed he was lol.


lovely weather and a huge variety of breeds-everything from border terriers and a sharpei to braccos, Hungarian hounds and a mastiff. I'll continue to practice at home and might take either one to the next cani-hike as its good for them to do it around other dogs. I am considering entering Quarrie for the Ruff Dugger towards the end of May-he'll be 1yo by then!

I've not tried the cani-hike at all but my worries were same as what you've said that it might be a bit slow paced for us, so that's confirmed it thought it'd be nice to walk in company I suppose?

I was also surprised at the sheer variety of breeds that took part! Out of interest what are your two? I was worried as mine was a lurcher she might not fit in as more designed as a sprinter rather than a marathon runner lol but she gets on great. There's a few beagles go to my class, the noise they make at the start is impressive.

I'm also considering Ruff Dugger! Have been told it's a great course and the venue is stunning 😁

I am expecting to be hobbling tomorrow! I don't like to walk in company if I'm honest (not really why I walk!) and I am lucky in that I have great walking around where I live. But, its good for my dogs to get around other dogs-they don't really see many where I am plus I can practise passing etc. It was a bit slow today but I don't know if its always like that-power walking it was not. I just can't make the monday blocks as it stands and the Falkirk weekend ones (which is also a schlep) are for more advanced runners. There is an Edinburgh club that I might join for the odd run on the saturdays I am working (I live near Biggar, work just outside Edinburgh).

One of mine is a smooth collie, the other is a working bred goldie-lots of people assume he is a lab goldie cross.

Traquair is lovely and its supposed to be a much less muddy course than the one in Auchinleck-only non-horsey people would think it fun to immerse themselves in mud I reckon ;) I am thinking about it, we'll have to see.

Haha I know what you mean I do enjoy just getting out in peace and quiet but likewise does the dogs good to socialise especially the younger lurcher as she can be quite reactive and the classes have done her good though we've a way to go! That's a shame none of classes are handy for you but I'm sure you'll get along as and when you can especially now you've enjoyed it!

Ah I think I seen you on the FB site then now they've uploaded the pics! Lovely dogs 😊

Haha at my one to one I was told horsey people tend to be good at canicross, guess we're used to the mud and don't mind getting a bit dirty 😂
