My other half had his first riding lesson last night on my friends big gorgeous Clysedale mare and....he has the bug!! He has asked for another lesson next saturday.

The lesson went fab, i only watched him as he got on and then i went to muck out as was too nervous to watch, but i sneaked a peak towards the end and he was walking figures of 8, steering by himself etc and as he put it he learned how to 'start, stop and steer'. He then asked how long it will take until he can gallop and wonders whether he would be ready for Burghley next year. Bless.

Am worried now he will decide he wants his own as I can't afford a new one for myself let alone him, maybe I will live to regret booking him the lesson

The problem with men riding is that they have no fear so he will probably improve so quickly that he will be bored very soon.

My OH only rides at the fun stuff, beach, fun rides, gallop tracks etc. and thinks it is brill but stick him in the school and he is bored in 5 mins.

Good luck and i hope you dont regret starting him off with horses.

And so the rot begins.......

My OH will not take lessons, so if he wants to ride my horse (FB) he does what I say!!

Oh, by the way, we went looking for a horse 'for OH' and I managed to pull a fast one and get a new ned for me instead, he now rides FB and I got the whizzy five year old AngloArab!

You are all right, I have a niggling feeling I might kick myself for this! His teacher said he was a natural, very confident and balanced.
I will be fuming if he gets better than me (that shouldn't be too hard for him to be honest as I am a numpty!). I have visions of him galloping round x country next summer while I still break out in a cold sweat about cantering in open spaces.
Oh well, on the bright side at least he can pull a trailer!!

My OH was just the same - got rising trot first time, cantered after 3 lessons and was telling me all about trot diagonals after about 4. Now he's getting frustrated as his improvement has slowed down and he's riding more varied horses so it takes longer to get used to them. Brilliant comment from a new instructor on Saturday when I asked her what he needs to work on (I hadn't seen the lesson): "His balance, control, relaxation, not being a passenger. Basically he needs to learn to ride!" He wasn't happy but now he's even more determined
