Oh how I wish I'd been taught to ride properly...

It's not really to do with the length of your leathers 'tho, it's the security and depth of your seat, and THAT is to do with how you are taught.

Thought I'd ressurect this thread to add a photo that I put together showing how I used ot ride compared to now. The "then" picture is from July 2010 but this is pretty much what we looked like up until I had lessons starting November 2012.

Improvement still needed but I think there is an improvement. Excuse the tinsel, it was Christmas Eve!

BTW, the picture on the right, my stirrups are a little bit shorter than I would normally ride with now. I just shortened them as we were hacking and wanted to be preparred in the event of any "wahoo" moments. Same goes for the bit! Normally ride in a snaffle

I think your position looks more relaxed and natural in the recent photo. Well done! :)

I wish I could sort my riding out. I had years of on/off riding school lessons (with some schools/instructors that were ok and others that I was basically paying to rent a horse as someone else on this thread has said!) before eventually buying my own (from a riding school - she wasn't suitable for them as she was too sharp to be ridden by the majority of riders there). I can ride ok and get a tune out of some horses but I think it is mainly because I click better with certain horses. I was getting the odd lesson on my own horse but now she can't be ridden I'm totally stuck. I want to keep riding but I don't know what is best. I'm skint because of all the vet bills so can't really afford regular lessons but even if I could, where could I go?!?! I'd love some lessons on a school master, to improve myself and then get the feel of riding a horse correctly and trying things that my horse wasn't good at (a little more that your basic lateral moves) and also to get my jumping position more secure. And after that I'd like to ride some more "quirky" horses under instruction. All I know of are riding schools.

There is one I know of which is good but I'm not sure I'd get quite what I'm looking for, particularly since I'd need to go for group lessons as they don't do private lessons any time I'm free. Where else can you go (Glasgow area if anyone is local) or where can you look to find such instruction? I only get to ride a friend's horse once a week (if I'm lucky with the weather!) and I'm struggling because I'm a little out of practice and the horse isn't getting ridden much overall so every time I ride I feel like I'm going back to square one for both of us!

Apologies for the rambling post but I'm a bit frustrated about the whole thing just now. I'd love to find another horse to ride more consistently however (aside from the financial side of it) I would be worried my riding wouldn't be good enough!

Agree with that, to be honest if you are reaching for the stirrups it seems to me your leathers are too long though.

I think a there are a fair few people who ride too long these days to emulate dressage riders but do not have the deep seat which as Cortez absolutely rightly says leads to security in the saddle. Many then become unbalanced and hang onto their horses mouth. I have been guilty of this especially if you try it in a GP which isn't really made for a classical seat.

I'm finding this too. I think i need book some lessons with a decent instructor. I haven't had any lessons for several years but struggle with many of the issues mentioned on this thread
