So excited I've been buying all Freds new gear and sorting his stable out ready for the long trip to pick him up next saturday.

Went up to check out his new paddock and another livery said hello etc (which was nice.) When she asked exactly what flavour Fred was i answered a TB and the reply was 'Oh....' :( Whilst not nasty she clearly didn't think much of ex-racers!

Poor Freddy. Does everyone have that reaction?? Hopefully we can prove her wrong.

Incidently he seems better behaved, even on race feed, than some of the other liveries!

I like TB's, do not worry about the response, I get that all the time when I say I have a friesian....some say WOW lovely ....most say 'oh really hmmm'.

You should be excited...pictures please!!

I love TBs. My old boy was 1/2 TB and I think that's the half that all his personality came from! They get bad press (from eejits) and sadly I know a few people who would have that reaction.

You know what, without wanting to be cute . . . "horses for courses" . . . some people are too quick to judge a horse by the breed without considering that horses are individuals. Personally, I like TBs (as a rule) . . . but then I like most equines . . . this woman is obviously lacking manners. Enjoy your lovely new boy and ignore the small-minded nay-sayers. I mean, what kind of person, isn't genuinely excited when another horsey person gets a new four-legged friend - no matter what variety or whether it's one you would buy for yourself?

Ignore her. She was rude. Pictures please! x

People think TB = nutty, oversensitive speed machine just as they think cob = slow and safe. Every horse is an individual and should be judged accordingly! I love TBs myself, beautiful and intelligent horses who are very adaptable :) Congratulation on your new neddy!

Certain people will have had bad experiences and carry them with them all their life, try not to be disheartened and give her the chance to see how wonderful he is :) enjoy, doesn't really matter if everyone else hates him, so long as you love him :)

Ignore her, they are fantastic beasties and i love them :-)
Park it on a t/b over xc and you wont go back :D

I love love love thoroughbreds. I have had a fair amount of horses over the years, and the TBs are always my favourites, they do have the biggest hearts and such wonderful characters. I have had american, british and a part bred TB, and all three have had very similar characters. Can't get enough of them.

This is me and Fred back in February taken at his P2P yard. I had to walk him out in hand for a few days after he managed to bang himself. He looks pretty fit and shiny here!

And this was me and Fred in October 2011, both looking very unfit (and cold)!! His head isn't really that big, honest!

I'll post more pictures as soon as we get him home next saturday, although he won't look very shiny after a month being roughed off.

Thankyou for the nice replies :) I'm sure she didn't mean to offend and it was lovely of her to ask but it is now my personal mission to make sure Fred is a good example!

Love my TB! I hope you are very happy with Fred :D

Some people did have preconcieved ideas about TBs and my boy amazed them all with how good he is (most of the time). He has given leads to the others past buses, pigs, trains, fields of cows even piles of snow! Not such a silly breed really...

If you had told my mum she would have said 'you're mad!'

However she does have good(ish) reason for her mindset. We had one TB who seemed to be suicidal - always coming in hopping lame etc. He also looked a horror to ride - lazy and rude and constantly reduced owner to tears. Then we got my loan TB who was a nutter - couldn't be tied up or wouldn't stand still at events, broke through fences, box walked. He calmed once turned out 24/7 and turned into a bit of a darling but mum's always stood by her guns and said she wouldn't touch another TB with a bargepole...

I however think they're lovely, Fred's very handsome, and just prove her wrong :D

So, you turn up with Frankel :eek: Oh, he's just a thoroughbred!!!:eek::eek: Stupid woman :D

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder ;) Am sure Fred is much better than her horse (bet she has a cob?!! :p - sorry all cob owners!!)

Who gives a STUFF what anyone else thinks, he's your horse! Enjoy!! ;)

For the record, I love all equines (some more than others and NONE more than my wench :D)

I love them and would love to have one but simply not suitable. I ride when I can be bothered maybe once or twice a week, paddocks have very little grass and our stables aren't really suitable for anything over 14.2. Maybe one day when my lifestyle is different

He's gorgeous :)

If you want proper cats-bum mouths off people, get a 16.3hh ex-racer for a 15yo who's straight off ponies. People do the "It'll end in tears face" a lot. And then look like twonks when, 2 years later, they bitch about how buying ready made horses is all right for some...

He is lovely and I look forward to more photos....has he moved about much? he might be a total loon for a bit...and this lady might have that 'knowing' look until he settles! but hopefully not! you may find she is simply a little nervous of new horses perhaps and didn't mean anything by it

Thankyou all, I'll tell him he is gorgeous and he won't be able to get his head through the stable door!!

Good to hear the majority of you have had good experiences and sorry for those who haven't.

I'm hoping we can start off our competing career with some in hand showing. Do any of you have any experience of ex-racehorse classes? What should I expect?

He hasn't moved around much as far as I know. Bought by Ginger Mcaine as a three year old (he is eight now) I believe, not sure where he went inbetween then and his current owner but I know he was the yard in the photo's for quite a few years.

I'm fully expecting a loony settling in period! The turnout boots are ready....

They are not my cup of tea, but i do think her response was a little off, he is lovely looking and im sure you will be happy together ignore what people think.
My feelings on TB'S is born from a bad exp but I would never judge anyone for having one and I will handle them would just never own or ride one again. I look forward to more photos.

Yes loony period is a given, and you might want to have the Kevin Bacon ready if he has typical TB feet :D

Have fun, I would get another TB in a shot and he looks beautiful.

I love 'em! Have had Irish, welsh and Heinz 47 who were all dreadful and am now on my fifth tb and would never have anything else!

Mine have all had good feet and never been headcases.

Good luck with him - he looks lovely.

I love TBs, the few times I have ridden them they have all been better behaved than some of the ponies I ride! Can't get enough of them <3

A friends TB showed me that I could stay on a galloping horse! He'd never been raced but had to be lead horse so when a tiny Hairy cob got too close to him in canter he took off. He's lovely to ride and each time he goes out on a hack it's like he's seeing a whole new world. When I eventually get a horse I suspect it'll be a TB.

This is the thing... TB's are unique! I have owned an ex national hunt racer and he was a typical TB, cruddy feet, easily excited, blow his brains if you brought a square of cloth into his stable, but a gentle giant who I would put a child on! but this is why once bitten you fall in love!! We currently own a hairy cob!! But hey I love horses so breed means nothing to me... I like to think TB's are ferraris and cobs are land rovers,. take landrover on the motorway and you feel uncomfortable and take a ferrari off road.... horses for courses. They all excel in their field!

I am a true horse lover and will find the good in every breed :-) So stuff her, she is obviously narrow minded!!

I love my TB, most massive character and brave as a lion. Fred looks fab, i'm sure he will change their minds in time :).
