Oh, it's a Thoroughbred....

I bought my TB (ex racer) 4 years ago and got a similar reaction to the OP at my very small DIY yard. Che and I are happy hackers and 99% of the time he is an absolute saint. He still has a few "moments" but these are always caused by external forces!! He struggles to cope with change so if anything out of the ordinary happens he gets a but flighty, if you leave him to work it out he calms down of his own accord. He is a pleasure to handle, hoof perfect in any traffic and has perfect manners. Yes, he is more high maintenance than your average cob but so, so worth it and I bought him knowing that he would be, I love the looking after side of things. He is better behaved than all the native and cobby ponies at the yard and generally, an easier ride, I am not brave but I ride him quite happily and I wouldnt get on any of the others! Have to admit, untill last year i hated tb, found the few i had met to be more trouble than they are worth. Then last year took on two share horses one a medium build supposedly ex show jumper and a ex racer mare. Sad to say i took on both thinking i can always just lunge the tb to keep her fit. Now im eating my words the ex showjumper can do dressage but not jumping, the ex racer is a honest jumping machine who will do her best to please even with my terrible jumping.
 
They have developed a reputation due to a few ending up in the wrong homes. Small minded people!!
I have arabs, people are often much ruder instead of 'Oh' its 'ugh!'
 
TB's are fab. Mine lives out 24/7, is barefoot and has always been sound. Her only vice is that she can't be tied which can be a pain but she ground-ties well. She can be a bit of a loony tune at times but I think that's being a mare rather than her breed. She is super-smart and curious and has such elegant paces. Sometimes she just takes my breath away with how beautiful she is....wipes tear from eye :) Freddie looks lovely, I am sure he will be a real ambassador for the breed. Good luck!
 
Never thought I'd have a TB... He's young, a 'failed race training' boy, can be a diva and has his moments - but I probably have more than him on a daily basis...:D Overall he's a genuine sweetheart who'll hack alone or in company, front or back and with the right rider will try his damnedest... So he hasn't the foggiest idea how to jump - he is only five...

We got the same from a few people when we got our exracer.....ignore them they are some of the most, bar a few, well behaved horses around.....hope you have lots of fun with him. X
