Just come in from training Freya, and whilst there was told that the local rescue have been contacted today by someone who wanted to bring in a puppy they couldn't cope with. They "rescued" it from Ireland, it is 3 months old, and according to its current owner it is a "German Shepherd x Alsatian"!

There are loads of husky crosses round here - the most common seem to be husky x GSD and husky x collie  My friend works in the local kennels and they've got 3 huskies in on 7 day notice plus a husky x akita that was handed in because it tried to remove a child's head from its body

I was always getting asked was my dog an Alsatian or a German Shepherd - it did my head in too! I used to ask and exactly what do you think the difference might be and I got answers like well the German Shepherd has a more sloping back and crouching hinds than an Alsatian  I would answer 'oh really?!'

Oh no, another cross..... :D I have to ask though as it's slipped my mind, why was the name changed? Am I right in thinking originally GSD, then alsatian, now GSD again?

When they were first imported to the UK they were registered as Alsatian Wolf Dogs because of anti-German feeling. The wolf dog name was quickly dropped and the KC, who eventually changed it to German Shepherd Dog (Alsatian) have finally dropped the Alsatian name after years of lobbying.
It always has been the German Shepherd Dog, it is the literal translation of the name in German.

Good article here from the daughter of the man who popularised the breed in Britain:
