Went down to the yard, lovely day, thought ide ride, even took my mum up with me! my mum didnt want to go down untill tea time but i just had to go down at dinner, not sure why but felt like i really had too, Got to the field and harmony had a red tail and blood all down her back legs, major panic and got her down to the yard where we cleaned it all too have a look, anyway thought she may need stitched when we cleaned it as just looked like a normal deep gash, called vet out and he was pulling all these faces and another livery who was down helping with her asked " will she be having stiches then?" and then the vet replied " alot worse than stitches do you have transport? she needs to get to york practice where she will be put to sleep and we will operate on her leg" by this point i was in tears and had to have a breather, Ends up she has cut her tendon and done something to a point in her hock, someone might be able to help me with this? it starts with a B and theres 2 behind the hock.
Anyway lots of fluid in her leg so they had to in a way remove the "cap" flush all the leg to get rid of anything that shouldnt be in there! About 6 oclock we found some transport and manage to set of on a 1 1/2 hour trip to the practice! Stayed with her while they prepared her for surgery, she was heavily sedated as before she couldnt put weight on her leg.

Left her about 8:15 as she went for her operation, got a call from the vets at 11:05 saying the operation had gone very well! They have sorted her tendon out as much as they can and cant see it being a problem in the future riding wise, sorted her hock out as much as they can, They say she will be ride-able but not sure to what level ): so no more jumping possibly!

Also said its a possibility she could end up with a capped hock?
Im not familiar with these, done abit of research but couldnt work much out.

anyone who got this far cookies and cake!
And possibly a bottle of vodka because i could sure do with one with the day ive had!

Any info on capped hocks much appreish!

Oh what a day!
Capped hock isn't anything serious so wouldn't worry about that, it does sound like she hasn't come out of it too badly though?

No, really quite pleased that its not to serious, been so stressed and worried all day, vet did say with this injury its all in the recovery as to how well she will come out in the end! Takes a long long time and vet said if we didnt have insurance we'de be looking at a very costly vet bill!

My god you must be feeling terrible! So sorry to hear about your poor horse. Capped hocks don't look very nice but aren't terribly serious. Worst case think golf ball on the point of hock. If that's the worst thing that comes of it then it only means your showing days are numbered. Good luck xx

well never showed only ever been jumping! but seems like now we're getting somewhere, ill have to start all over again, because its a long recovery!

Thank goodness you went down to the yard when you did and not waited until tea time. I hope all goes well with her recovery and your sleep for tonight.

Oh poor you and poor horsey, Thank god you went down to see her when you did. Isn't it funny how we sometimes just know something's not quite right.
Thinking of you and your horse, wishing her a speedy recovery and keep us updated.

Oh no! (((hugs for you and your horse)))!
Hope she gets back to her usual self soon !! My old mare ripped a tendon in a back leg and I got told she would probably never jump again, she did though. She never had to have an op though.

Hope your ok today!

How awful for you all. <<<<postive healing vibes>>>>

My mare damaged the tendons just above her fetlock (kick from another horse). It was a long slow recovery process (not helped by ripping them open again after 3 months box-rest

) but she is able to hack, jump and do some dressage. Can't show anymore as she is slightly short on that leg in walk and the fetlock is thicker than the other and slightly mis-shapen.

Oh no poor you and Harmony! And I thought i'd had a bad day, fingers crossed for a speedy recovery. Capped hock is nothing to worry about, something you woulg get marked down if showing but won't effect her way of going. Let us know how she gets on, when will she come home?
