I think Pugzie (my pug) has a tick!

What on earth do I do?, I've looked at pictures of them just now on Google and it does look like one, its kinda grey/fleshy colour, about the size of one of those coloured balls that you get on the end of pins and its on her neck.

So do I take her to the vets to have it removed? I've never come across them before, guess she has just picked it up from the long grass where I walk her....I really don't know.

HELP!

I don't think (if I knew) I'd be able to remove it myself because I'm really squeamish and she's a wriggle bottom.

Any advice gratefully received please.

A vet nurse will have it out in a jiffy.

I could give tips but to make sure that it is all out, including the head, but if you are squeamish and the dog is wriggly it is best to let an experienced person do it.

(Also, I nearly flambed my bitch the last time I tried so I am not the best to give advice)
 
OK, you can turn it counter clockwise with your fingers (do not squeeze it too much or you will squeeze all the yucky stuff back into the dog) or strike a match, put it out, put it on tick until it drops off (then see where it fell and stamp on the wee bollox) and clean the area with alcohol (matches + whiskey is how I nearly ended up with char-grilled German Shepherd) or put whiskey on a cotton bud and rub it on until it falls off.
 
Use Frontline and it should drop off in 24-48 hours by itself.

If you can bear to do it yourself, drown it in oil and then you should be able to pull it out head and all using a pair of twizers.
 
Ewww they are manky!

You can buy tick hooks from the vets for about £4 which are dead easy to use, then set fire to the little sods.
 
I wouldn't go to the vet for that, unless you have another reason for going.

you'll probably get them at the local pet shop or your vets. Just be careful to twist them round and not pull at all, once you have twisted enough, they just pop off

If you fancy being brave or want to do it now, just get a thin piece of tissue (I have used my bare fingers, but one big one burst on me and I was nearly sick).
You need to turn your hand as clockwise as it will go, so that you can then hold the tick gently (don't squeeze) and turn it anti clockwise a full turn or more without letting go. Don't pull or you'll leave the head in & don't squeeze or it'll either burst or push all the yuk back inside. Just hold gently and when you twist enough, it'll just pop off.

traadaaa!. Easy peasy - Go get it now before you have your lunch

If you are really sure that it is a tick you need to forget your squeamishness and not tolerate any wriggle bottom behaviour, without focus on the diseases that the little bloodsucking bastard can give your little darling if you leave it where it is one second more than necessary.

Use tweezers or your fingertips, get a grip as close to the skin as possible and either pull out or twist around clockwise or counter clockwise, any way that makes it release. Once out, kill it!

but I know some people prefer smothering thme in vaseline then when they drop off kill em!
or match (blow it out but whilst red hot put it on the little bugger!)

Id maybe take your pug for a vet nurse visit (generally free) and they will show you how to remove it (or your OH)

If they have them, buy several of their tick-removing tools when you're at the vets. I have several in my first aid box at home, in the first aid box in the summer home and one or two in my dressing case.

Personally I prefer those that looks like a pen, with a string in one end that you can tighten/release around the tick.


Killing ticks examples : squeeze them until they go splat, flush them down the toilet or put them in a piece of paper and burn them in a wood stove.

I would never trust a live one not to crawl out of a dustbin.

The tick removal device is fab. I got mine from the vets. It's pincer shaped and you just hook it around, I guess the bottom of the head, rotate clockwise (or anti)! and it will pop out. Don't pull with tweezers as you will end up ripping the body off and the head will remain inside the dog. I usually flush down the sink but if if they are really plump and have been sucking on my poor dogs blood for ages...............I squash and pop them
