Oh my gosh, I am going crazy..... complete rant.............

Thank-you EVERYONE!
I'm just awaiting the tel number of back person to come and check him - step 1......

He behaved well tonight with Sophie, but his tail keeps swishing in complaint, especially on the right reign......

I'll keep you posted!

Me too! I got a new horse 4 1/2 weeks ago, and he rears. He doesn't just do one small rear either, its 5 or 6 in a row, the full way up so I'm scared he's going to come over backwards. Usually on the 5th or 6th one I get off to avoid this. It seems to be a sudden response to napping. Nice horse otherwise and seems well settled. The dealer I got him from is horrified as the person he got him from was quite a novicey person and is happy to exchange him for me, but none of us can figure out what has caused this extreme reaction. Have had his teeth done and they were a little sharp, had saddle and back checked and are fine. Horses can really test new riders but I think I'd rather have a bucker than a rearer.

Just reading up on haylage......Don't think it helped that he consumed 3 haynets worth of haylage on Sat afternoon/eve while I was bathing him etc, and then another on Sunday morning!! Oculd have contributed accoridng to forums/info......

I would seriously get another qualified opinion on the saddle fit...no matter how much you trust the original fitter. And yes a not so well fitting saddle can trigger serious bucking. If anything it's more likely as a Horse in pain may well feel less inclined to make big movements. Back pain can often have symptoms that don't obviously point to it like fussing with the bit and mild lameness. If you think about it if you have a sore back you'll do anything to avoid moving but if something is nipping you out of the blue your first reaction is to get rid of it!! I'm also inclined to think this as you say your very good rider friend has the Horse behaving bit still showing signs of unhappiness.

My money is on the saddle not fitting and that would be the FIRST thing I would check.

I had a very similar thing (and even posted on here about it, it was couple of years ago!). Bought a horse WITH her saddle. First time I rode her she bucked like a flippin bronco every time I went into canter. Tried again, same. Wanted to send her back blah blah. Talked to old owner, who *eventually* admitted it wasn't the horses saddle

it was just one they had as a spare

The point is the saddle looked ok to me but wasn't and it caused her to buck

I changed the saddle and no more bucking.

I actually sold the mare in February for a variety of reasons, not least that I found her a bit boring to ride

So, please check the saddle and good luck!

Extra thought.....He now gets plenty of haylage.....Not sure what he was on before. Could this make a difference?

My horse cannot tolerate ANY cereals OR haylage....just fibre/oil diet and bog-standard hay...otherwise he is a right pain in the but.

I would ditto saddle/teeth checks also.

good luck
