Does anyone have a clue what this is called? It would be interesting to see what the mouthpiece is, are, it looks like a double perhaps?
 
crap does that have 3 sets of reins to articulate? that's some knitting to get tangled up in :eek:

I thought that too, but what appears to be the middle rein is actually the curb rein on the other side, I think. Rather deceptive angle to the photo.
 
Obviously some type of double but with three reins, eeek! No idea of a name for it but I think it's probably used for Western riding, maybe the 'tricks' they like to do? I can't imagine a horse being ridden with a conventional (meaning English style) contact in that bit.

I'm pretty sure I saw this on a horsey blog a while back and IIRC yes, it is western. Still :eek: though.
 
Odd! Looks like the curb would come on when you use the snaffle rein through those loop things. I wonder if the curb is reversible hence the semi circle in front to be used like a Pelham?

So it is, I was thrown by the apparent absence of reins on the far side... That's marginally less weird, but I don't think I'll be ordering one for my lot just yet :eek:
 
It looks to me like 2 reins with the 3rd one from the bottom being some kind of 'martingale' attached to an almost chiffney looking loop at the back.
 
I thought second to top rein was some sort of standing martingale like contraption.
Then 2 reins on either side as your usual reins and the bottom rein on the right hand side working alone as a curb.
Hard to tell from that picture but how odd!
 
Looks like a form of double bridle.
The Curb is so shaped to have more leverage, and the 'bradoon' looks like it has a hollow shaft that the actual mouthpiece runs through, kind of like a scurry bit.

I have to say, if a horse is 'in need' of a bit such as this, you may as well use barbed wire :(

Looks like someone has made their own "double bridle"

Looks to me like the bridoon would work a bit like a wilson/scourier. The curb is really strong (crank ratio is high), and if you have to engage it fully, the port is so high that it'll probably choke the poor horse. At that point, I think the side pieces would also elevate the bridoon, making sure he gets a chop in the teeth too.

Poor horse would be better off with a hammer attached to his headstall.

How do I do one of those shocked faces?
