Oh no! Flatcoat x Goldie! Why?

Guide dogs have also used Gsdxlab and Golden retriever. Curly coatxlab. In smaller numbers have used irish water spaniel, collies, spinone, standard poodle and Australian shepherd.

We cross-breed cattle, sheep, horses, and lurchers too, with purpose and one which gives the animal a use. Selection is vital but 'generally', and with most crossbred dogs, there is little thought, if any. Some are a mistake whilst others are just a route to supposedly making money.

How breeding dogs for profit can be viewed as a viable business is beyond me. Even if a bitch produces a litter of (say) 7 pups, she needs to be kept and maintained, daily and for a year for probably only one litter of pups annually. I've bred a few litters of pups and from a variety of types and breeds, but have never kept a bitch, not one, simply to produce pups. Every litter of pups which I've bred have been to 'see what we get'!

I agree that is ok to breed x breeds if it's for a genuine purpose and that the pups are going to have a home and a job.
I disagree with designer x breeds that are bred simply for money.

Why is it considered unethical for a bitch to willingly mate with a dog and do exactly what nature intended, to end up giving the owner a few quid, and not unethical to AI mares and cows to sell their offspring for a profit?

Why is it ethical to breed that bitch to produce show stock for prestige, and not to breed puppies for profit?

Dog breeding ethics seem completely illogical to me.

We eat cows (or their offspring) and from some we drink their milk, that's why we keep cattle.

There's nothing wrong with breeding dogs and fooling ourselves that we ever show a profit when we take out the annual keep-costs, if that's what we want to do, or we're deluded! As you say, the ethics of dog breeding are illogical and most who would try to fool the world are also fooling themselves.

Opened my Horse & Hound to see this x of puppies for sale. Why would you do it? Two lovely breeds that don't need intermingling. Very sad.

Chiffy -perhaps it is my 'showing' upbringing - I share your views entirely :(

What do they possibly think that a cross of this type will add to either breed?

If it is an accident, I am afraid that all I can say is **head desk** at owners who cannot keep a bitch in season away from an entire dog.... I've been doing it for the first 19 years of my life and really, it is NOT difficult!!!

Really ss! Do you know that for a fact? Why would the Guide Dog people specifically use a flatcoat/lab when Labradors are so good at the job in their own right? Flatcoats are intelligent and love to work but take longer to mature than labs and have a certain joie de vive and sense of humour! Think I might investigate that one.

!

I happen to know of a young lad who has (well just retired now) a flattie for a guide dog. Also, there was a thing on FB going round about a FC/CC cross guide dog that went missing.
