Now i'm feeling bad that my three arabs, including the 25 year old are still unrugged! They do have access to the the barn though and are all very good doers with plenty of grass to eat. We've got dumpers and diggers here today so they are shut in during the day but have barely touched their hay so can't be that cold.
Mine are unrugged 24/7/365 unless the weather takes a nasty sudden turn like severe storms , sudden snow, sudden drop in temps.
i dont clip mine ever and they have a good thick fluffy bear winter coat as it is and almost constant forage. I didnt know arabs were so hardy, especially to irish weather! Lol ...Although both of them have welsh cob blood in them so that probably helps.

Its crossed my mind that when theres a bad storm they probably would be better off out in the fields so they can keep warm running their heightened energy off from the windy gusts, but there’s many large trees everywhere, and branches and entire trees are blown down in every severe storm, and there’s electric fencing...which i turn off power in a storm.....and the storms 90% happen always during the dark hours of night, so it always seems a higher risk for them being out than being in the open barn and large corral area right near my house so i can keep and eye on them.

lashing rain and being soaked they handle really well and never shiver.....its when its combined with high winds that makes them cold. My mare is incredible...half arab/welsh....she’s not flinched from eating when it suddenly pours and she’s soaked in 2 minutes....whereas the 3/4 arab blood gelding is quickly making way for the trees to shelter! He particularly hates his face and ears being wet, not so bothered about his body....if only i could get a waterproof full face mask for him, that’s all he would prefer!

Arabs are very hardy especially the old fashioned type but most aren't keen on rain, extreme heat and cold fine but wind and rain not so good. I do bring mine in when it's windy as otherwise they run round like lunatics and are more likely to injure themselves and they are quite happy once they are in.

We’re quite exposed to the south winds and over the years theyve got more used to strong wind....me, not so much, i hate it! Before they used to be quite frantic about wind. Its a relief theyve got very used to tarps flapping, gusts etc.

I’ll never forget their first reaction to witnessing snow - high heads, big noses and shocked eyes as if something really weird was happening! It was hilarious seeing them walk in it....not being sure how to place their feet, i spent ages out there with them stomping around in it and scooping it up and throwing it on me to show them in was ‘safe’! Lol
