My friend has a skinny TB that is dropping weight. He is currently on ad lib hay at night, ride and relax, spillers horse/pony cubes and chaff. However, still dropping weight...

I have suggested Alfa A oil, baileys no:4 and pink powder/equilibria balancer.

Anyone think of any other suggestions?

Switch the hard feed to Allen & Page's 'Calm and Condition'. I have my TB ex-racer on this. Its a great feed, high in oil so puts weight on without the 'fizz'. Would suggest feeding 3 x a day as you have to add water so splitting the feeds may be better.
Hope this helps!

Extra oil, couldnt use no4 on our new mare went loopy but good on allen and paige calm and condition.Have just added linseed pellets for extra protein and oil benefits. d and h build up worked on my gelding(tb) a few years ago.

My skinny boy is on horsehage cherry chaff. Flicker all rounder mix, sugar beet and Pink powder. Plus adlib haylage.
He's feelin well.. looking good and actually putting weight on.

[/ QUOTE ] The following will certainly provide extra calories, but is a big leap up from the current feed, and the cereal content of the No 4 could potentially fizz the horse up if it is sensitive to cereals. Also if you are feeding the recommended amount of the No 4 then you are doubling up with vit/mins if you feed the Pink Powder or balancer. If you feel the horse needs a probiotic supplement because you believe the gut flora to have been disrupted due to antibiotic treatment, stress etc., then best to choose one that is not also supplemented with vit/mins if you are going to feed alongside a supplemented feed like No 4.

Personally, my first step would be to give three feeds a day of Alfa A Oil and Spillers Response Slow Release Cubes - will provide more calories than original diet, but mainly from fibre and oil, rather than cereals which may fizz a TB up.

I feed my TB on calm and condition as well, and he looks really good at the moment, and has kept the weight on all winter! Also feed him equilibra too

Top spec conditioning flakes are the best thing since sliced bread imo!!!!! they are fab and only about £10 a bag - 1/2 scoop in each meal and I could see the difference in about 10 days

Another vote for topspec super conditioning flakes! Fab stuff - you don't need to feed so much of it as 'traditional' conditioning feeds and it didn't fizz my horse up like baileys number 4!
