As title, not for towing but for chucking stuff in the back. He currently has a freelander but it's trashed by him putting all his allotment stuff / dogs etc in it. He's toyed with a Defender but he can't his head around the fact he'll end up with an older car than he's got now (even though it'll last forever)

So what would you recommend ? :)

We have a Nissan Navara good car easy to drive and park, feels like driving a car and i find it easy to reverse which is easier!
We tried the l200 it was like driving a boat and very rocky to drive- felt like a proper work horse but not an everyday car although i know some who love them.
I would prob go for a hilux or a Nav as they were nicest to drive.
My OH also wanted a defender but i was like your OH and refused to have a car that's old!

I have a Mitsubishi L200, it has the turning circle of an ocean liner and parking it in normal carparks requires the patience of a saint, finely tuned spacial awareness and the ability to blithely ignore the queues of irate car drivers that invariably amass whilst you manoeuvre it into/out of a space. Other than that it's good for filling with junk/hay/dogs and I like mine, it makes me feel like a drugs baron/gangsta.

I have an l200 too and I love it, it's a beast! It has cost us a small fortune to maintain though as the cylinder head went which is an apparently common problem. I get road raged all the time by boy racers and middle aged men in middle aged men cars. Hilarious. It's worth having one just to laugh at how enraged it makes people (I'm a child!!). It's funny when boy racers rev their tinny wee engines at you then wet themselves at the proper growl they get back :D

Milage wise it's pretty much what you'd expect. Heavier than a normal car and more when towing. It tows well though and it's happy to essentially be a skip so it suits us.

I do like navaras and the hilux rates really well. My bil has a new defender but I doubt it'll ever get any dirt on it!!

Peugeot 504! but their not making them anymore - don't bother asking the driver if you see one if it's for sale because it won't be! Mitsu L200 - steers like a pig on a door and all insurers think you're fair game with one!

We have a Hilux Double Cab chosen partly because of the spacious back seats. We find it very pleasant to drive and much more maneuverable than our previous mitsubishi. Son has one of the new Ford Rangers which is very smart with all the toys, his previous one (an 09) was smaller but still a very easy drive but back seats were definitely cramped. The new ranger has 20,000 mile / one year service intervals too which is great if you do a high mileage.

Ive got an Isuzu Rodeo and I love it. Lovely to drive, easy to park and loads of room in the cab for the good stuff and in the pick up bit for the dogs and mucky stuff.

We too have a new Ford Ranger with all the bells and whistles. It's great for towing and great for chucking the dog in the back, or hay, or feed or whatever. Only downside is my girls (both teens and taller than me) hate travelling in the back seat as they find it quite uncomfortable and insist on bringing pillows even for relatively shoet journeys, ie, an hour.

Had the Mitsi L200, newer shape, before that and loved it, very comfy in the 'car' and again, fab space for the 'stuff' in the back.

Both are hateful to park at the supermarket tho!

We have a Hilux and I much prefer it to the other pickups around. They have longer service intervals than the Nissan and Mitsubishi too. And they are indestructable as proven on Top Gear! :D

We have an indestructible Hilux, you just can't beat it. Done over 200,000 miles on the one engine and still pulls like new up 1 in 3 slopes. Nothing beats it in snow, either.

We have a Mitsubishi l200 2011 barbarian model - the turning circle and fuel consumption is much improved we have a hardtop cover for the back and it regularly carries 2 big dogs with comfort, and I also load it up with small round haylage bales, my hubby loves it and it pulls like a train!! I love driving it too!!

Not a Nissan Navara! We've had one for six months and both hubby and I have had back pain since driving it! Also, a total stranger came up to us in the street to ask if we had experienced back ache too! We're changing as soon as poss. Friend has a Hilux and says they are great.

Our Nav is a 2.5l engine. And i like it as back seats fold up so totally flat which is ideal for spoilt dog who doesn't go in boot!
Its service is due every 18000miles so quite good. Costs about 100quid to fill tank from empty but that's quite normal for all. The turning circle is pretty good. But i would suggest you go test all models and see which you prefer. There isn't loads so won't take too long or limit by cost.

Seems to be veering towards the hilux then. Only me and him as his kids are all grown up so back seats / space not an issue :)

Don't do supermarkets so that shouldn't be a problem :)

The only problem I can think of is him not being used to the 'pick up' bit and reversing into my car on the drive ;)

We have just bought an Isuzu D-Max but it's new to the market, so I don't think there are many used ones around. It's great though, definitely recommended.

Just looked at Hilux's on autotrader and he's quite keen. Going to have a chat with our 'car man' and ask him to keep an eye out :)

I love driving his freelander so can't wait for a 'Gangsta bitch' Pickup :D

Pimp my ride here I come ;)

I regularly knock the dustbins over with my truck and (ahem) may have accidentally made it kiss bumpers with my husband's little mx5 the other day. His own fault really for just leaving it in the drive and never using it.

Actually Im much better cause you can see corners at back so hard to hit something. I find it easier to reverse even in super market than my clio! Although it does stick out a foot from all spaces!
We would have had a hilux but Nissan was way better deal.

We did a lot of research before buying ours and spoke to a local mech who works at 4x4 centre

L200 came out best and the mech also said they were the best for not breaking down, he said stay well away from Nissan Nav.

We bought a L200 animal 2008 and never had a bit of bother it was work putting in the research for.

We get 32.25 mph - I use a special calculator that tracks fuel economy . Mile cost 20p

When towing 1 large 17hh horse mpg goes down to 26 on average

Hope that helps

Ps should of added, I have no bother parking it, and I park daily in a tiny multi story car park. I can nip it inthe tinest if spaces but then I am a pretty awesome driver LOL :D
