My farrier said to me rather than buying branded hoof oil you can just use "normal" oil but I cant remember which one

Is it veggie, sunflower, corn etc - anyone no and if you use it does it help?

Thanks

IMO hoof oil should be used only in the showring. It prevents the natural movement of water in and out of the hoof wall and can cause no end of problems.

If you want to use a dressing daily, much better to go for one of the water based ones such as NAF Hoof Moist.

This is what I was lead to believe. Had a fab info sheet sent me from Keratex.
I use Keratex in winter and NAF hoof moist in summer

My farrier says to leave them alone full stop

Merlin had really cracked feet and I was using all sorts of stuff made for poor feet..... it wasnt till I stopped using anything that they improved!!!

Only thing I put on now is Effol if we go to a show!

Sadly I have come across that far too many times

Personaly, I don't like any oil, but a water-based one can be used short-term.

My farrier says to avoid all hoof treatments and feed Farriers Formula to improve hoof quality if really necessary. I only use oil in the show ring.

One of the boys had very cracked dry hooves but since we've been using Effol every day (the green one NOT the black one) on the farrier's recommendation his feet have been fab. Smells nice too !

If you want to improve the feet forget any oil or dressings, you need to look at what you are feeding and work out how much of the essentials things that the hoof needs like biotin are being fed, and address accordingly. There are quite a few good feed supplements around for feet, such as Farriers Formula etc, not the chaff based rubbish like Healthy Hooves or whatever they call it.
