Does anyone use oil rather than supplements for their horses joints? I don't want anything that gives energy or for weight gain, just for joints as his getting older or am I better off to buy a supplement?
I can vouch for turmeric. It makes a HUGE difference to me with my shoulder tendonitis. I really know if I miss a dose! It is fast acting too. I've not tried it on horses though.
Turmeric barely smells, have you had a sniff of it? It's not curry powder.
I've done a bit of reading on this recently as oil and turmeric are one of the latest 'in fashion' joint supplements and I wanted something to help my old boy. Omega 6 oils can actually increase the inflammatory response, so sunflower, corn and vegetable oils should probably be avoided. I think linseed or extra virgin olive oil is omega 3 which is much better. In addition to turmeric and pepper I've heard great things. I started my arthritic pony on linseed oil, turmeric (heaped teaspoon twice a day)and pepper last week...will let you know how we get on!
Oil is a fat, fat = calories = energy but its not like sugar cane.I shall be off to get my oil can then
I can't bear the smell of turmeric which is annoying as it sounds brilliant, anyone use plain sunflower? Or cider vinegar? But then I've heard that can cause ulcers so not sure about that.
