Does anyone use oil rather than supplements for their horses joints? I don't want anything that gives energy or for weight gain, just for joints as his getting older or am I better off to buy a supplement?

Omega 3 oils are supposed to be very good, but being arthritic myself and having a 20+ yr old arthritic mare, we are both pain free and thriving on Tumeric, all my horses take tumeric via a sarnie and consider it as a treat.

Yes, bit hard to squirt it in to the joints mind but we do manage with good old fashioned oil can and a thorough rub. Does them a work of good.

I shall be off to get my oil can then :)

I can't bear the smell of turmeric which is annoying as it sounds brilliant, anyone use plain sunflower? Or cider vinegar? But then I've heard that can cause ulcers so not sure about that.

I can vouch for turmeric. It makes a HUGE difference to me with my shoulder tendonitis. I really know if I miss a dose! It is fast acting too. I've not tried it on horses though.

I can't stand the smell of turmeric either! However since my horse has been on it, firstly I've become used to the stink and secondly it's done wonders for him.
Going on the research I did before trying it, it seems the oils good for joints and that are anti inflammatory are only Olive, linseed or coconut oils. They don't recommend any others as being good for arthritis so maybe try one of those minus the turmeric if you don't want to go down that route?

Which brand / capsules do you take? Do you not bother with the oil and pepper?

I did try some holland and barratt ones, but they gave me wind!!

My horse gets approximately a tablespoon in her dinner, My older cat is on Seraquin tablets that have given her a completely new lease of life. I haven't started on me yet, but will add a teaspoon to milk and glug it down quick.

I've done a bit of reading on this recently as oil and turmeric are one of the latest 'in fashion' joint supplements and I wanted something to help my old boy. Omega 6 oils can actually increase the inflammatory response, so sunflower, corn and vegetable oils should probably be avoided. I think linseed or extra virgin olive oil is omega 3 which is much better. In addition to turmeric and pepper I've heard great things. I started my arthritic pony on linseed oil, turmeric (heaped teaspoon twice a day)and pepper last week...will let you know how we get on!

Brilliant that's really helpful, hope it works for him.

I dont think you can beat linseed for joints .I take the oil for myself and the horse has Simple System linseed mix.Have noticed a big improvement in his movement( old leg injury was bothering him).I get the oil for myself online from www.Flax Farm. They supply for horses and dogs too.As it has to be kept in the fridge I buy a few bottles and can keep for 6mths in the freezer.

Apple cider vinegar is a preventative of EGUS... As it encourages salivation which helps ulcers. It's very well known in racing and with vets. Most people feed it 50ml in 100ml water or in feed.

You shouldn't spread things that are not true.

Joints are all about prevention... once gone, it won't come back like it was before so do be careful how you treat your horse on a day to day basis. How you work them, posture etc. feed is important.

ACV, linseed etc all help preserve joints by encouraging some regeneration but scientific studies are negligible but reducing inflammation is your key to joint preservation.

Just thought I would report back briefly....1 week in with tumeric and oil and my pony literally bounced round a half hour ride this morning. I was actually glad it was my friend riding rather than me (I was on my sisters pony), he was very happy to be out. It may be a coincidence but he was moving very nicely for a stiff arthritic 18 year old. Lets see what the next few weeks brings.

Oil is a fat, fat = calories = energy but its not like sugar cane.
I am not convinced cider vinegar will get to joints, if you try it yourself, I think you will find it tastes like any other vinegar. Acetic acid, not sure it will do any good.
