I feed lidl veggie oil for coat and condition, approx 300ml per day. It's a good way to get extra calories in without having to feed extra hard feed. Would prefer to feed outshine but fussy pony doesn't like it
sprout - soya oil is known to be among the best for providing stamina, however, its slow release so can't really see why that would immediately turn pony into a lunatic??
I feed veg oil (for epsm)....
but generally...
cod liver oil = good for joints
soya = good for condition and stamina
linseed oil = good for coat condition....
I just add veg oil from a supermarket to each feed. The volume goes up and down depending on weather, time of year, etc. Usually it's about a 250ml dose a day at this time of year.
I find it's a good way to add slow release energy and, as I only offer a high fibre diet, calories.
i love linseed oil and in ireland i use to get a mixed linseed oil but can not seem to get it over here.
my horse is not nuts on soya but he is very laid back. i am sure if he was human he would be a stay in bed with paper sort lol!!
I feed linseed oil, recommended by the vet at a cup a day to keep my old mares poops nice and soft after impaction colic. A cup is 250mls, we're currently at 200mls and increasing it slowly.

Steer clear of cod liver oil EXCEPT UNDER DIRECT VETERINARY INSTRUCTION. It is dangerously high in vitamin D.It can be very harmfull.

Oh dear, thats not good news for literally thousands of horse owners who use it regularly!! Never heard that one before.....its sold by all the major equine supplement manufacturers too.....
I feed sunflower oil in the winter, about 150ml - 200ml a day. It is to add calories but also makes his coat nice!
I wouldn't feed cod liver oil as I'm not sure horses are designed to eat fish products.

[/ QUOTE ]The first full scale feed trial of cod liver oil on horses was carried 100 years ago by the Austrian army. (They found it had deleterious effects ,but couldnt find out why) Vitamin D was not discovered for another 50 years. In humans ,the world health organisation ,went on record saying that their policy of "blanket"dosing with cod liver oil caused far more irreversible harm than it helped the few cases who needed it. They stated that it was"The worst mistake they ever made".Vitamin D is directly involved with the laying down of Bone, . Excessive amounts can result in boney deposition in soft tissue(splints)and formation of a "plaque " in veins which encourages thrombosis. It is a fat soluble vitamin ,and the body cannot get rid of it except by using it.
