I'm thinking of feeding oil to my three year old to aid his weight. He has a high fibre diet made up of 1 scoop hi fi lite, 1 scoop alfa a twice a day, a large haynet at night and much grass as he can lay him hooves on (as he lives out 24/7). What sort of oil would help and in what quantities?

a couple of spoonfulls aday and have you tryed sugarbeet
i would worry about to much weight as hes still only young and still developing

he doesw have sugar beet in his pm feed...i should have put that on. I mean, he's not ultra skinny but, he has lost a bit of condition through the winter.

he will do as through winter there is no grass but come spring/summer i think you will find he pick up again what breed is he?

Our youngsters don't - in fact they thrive.

Agree about the corn oil - that would be my preference. I would give it twice a day morning and evening in his feed, around 10mls - although you can feed more. I would also be inclined to give sugar beat in the evening as well. We also feed boiled barley - which the horses absolutely love, and does wonders for their condition. I would also stop the HiFi Lite and increase the Alfa, with perhaps some nuts.

Most importantly though, make sure that he has access to good quality hay or haylage, 24/7.

all horses are different some thive and some dont it depends how much weight they had on them and what your feeding them and how much you got to consider that grass makes up a percentage of the diet its like us if we stop eating chocolate and start eating carrots we are going to lose weight it depends on if the horse is a good doer or not and as a 3 yr they are all over the place as it is with weight and height
