Hi everyone

Bloss gets a bit scurfy in the winter and i am currently feeding her Equidermis to keep her coat and skin nice. Its costing me a fortune tho, so i was wondering what oil i could give her instead to help with her skin?

I remember someone posting about something you can get in bulk from Tescos (!) but i cant remember what it was.

Thankies in advance

great!!! thank you!!! does it keep their skin nice too? as she always has a good coat but her skin where her mane and tail are go scurfy for some reason - i bath her in teatree oil shampoo when its bad which helps.

linseed is the best oil as it is high in omega 3 which means it is also good for joints (and brain function - not sure how relavent in the horse!!!). you can boil it or give the oil directly (NAF do one).

linseed will work for the skin and general condition as well as being good for the joints. you can't feed much linseed oil at one go so some people feed lots of cheap veg oil and a splash of linseed (to increase the omega 3 as its the only one that has high levels). personally with aran the linseed does just fine and he's nice and shiny with a good soft coat.

veg oil for my boys - supermarket about £1.60 for 3 litres
It's also good for ones who don't kept weight onwell, so i have one fatty and one skinny so i have to give then correct splash to each type

Both of my boys have had beautiful glossy coats since feeding black sun flower seeds. They both get a mug twice a day with their chaff. I have also noticed an improvement in their feet too. Cheap - 15 kilo sack costs me £7.

Another thing for winter is to hot towel. This is especially good on clipped horses but does work on unclipped coats.

Take a bucket of very hot water - wear rubber gloves. Put a drop of dettol or you can use vinegar and I like to add 1/2 a teaspoon each of lavender, peppermint and tea tree oil.

Use a small hand towel and make sure it is really well wrung out. Lay on horse - leave for about 30 seconds to steam and rub downwards firmly. Keep repeating until horse is glossy and water is filthy. Change water if it gets really nasty.

Result - nice smelling, refreshed and glossy horse. The horse should not be wet but very slightly damp at the end.

Hi Theresa_F
with regards to feeding your horses sunflower seeds. Have they had the shells removed or are they the normal seeds with shells on.

where do you get your large sacks of sunflower seeds from? I love your towel tip too - have printed it out. Her coat is normally fine, its just her mane and tail that get scurfy, its really odd. I do bath them in warm water and tea tree oil over the winter to help maintain them.

I too use black sunflower seeds !

We get ours delivered with our horse feed, also seen them in local pet stores by the 15 kg bag! ( though can't find them as cheap as T F

) They are bird feed so lots of places do them, and have to agree coat looks fab!

Black sunflower seeds are fed with the shells on. They are soft to eat.

Only side effect I have had is the odd plant growing in the muckheap and once between a gap in the rubber mats.

You can feed striped ones, but the blacks ones are more preferable.
