Oiling/Feeding new stirrup leathers

Hello there

I am having a doh ball moment.

Is it a do or a dont to oil/feed stirrup leathers? My new leathers are a bit stiff, but I dont want them to stretch either.

Any ideas?

I oil mine... I think it's okay! :S

No, use a Leather Feed such as Effax or Hamanol.

Thank you very much. I have just got some hamanol for a bridle and will give that a go. I dont have any oil at the mo.

don't ever oil leathers or girth straps or reins. It causes them to stretch and weaken. Just roll them in your fingers - they will soon soften.

Have always made a point of soaking all my new leather in oil, I have stirrup leathers saddles and girths that are 20+ years old, they are in brilliant condition and still in use, they have not stretched or weakened in all those years. I have a bridle that is 30 years old and you would not know, that too was soaked in quality oil when it was new.
