If you are a first time dog owner I would say possibly lab, I have had JRs and they can be quite feisty. However, I have to agree with Lynwood re the length of time you would leave your pup. When I used to breed GSDs I would not have let a pup go to a home where it would be left for this length of time, purely because it would have been impossible to house train it etc. An adult dog would be ok, but not a pup. If you can definitely time it so you get the puppy at the start of the long summer holiday would be ideal, but you may find this narrows your choice of litters. Good luck anyway, I'm sure you will get lots of help from this forum.

The plan is to get this dog when my daughter starts study leave for her GCSEs. She will then be off for over four months and at home most of the time or at the stables and will take dog with her to stables.

This way we will have training done before leaving dog alone. We have also sourced puppy training classes locally which we would start as soon as dog had finished injections etc.

I understand what you say - this is the cause of my ambivalence. But as I say this question was asked and lots of people do it.

I think it's too long to leave a puppy to it's own devices, when your daughter goes back to school it will still only be 6 months old. Could you consider getting a dogwalker in at lunch time?

i work at a kennels and must say i like the lads alot better the JR are noisy and v energetic while some labs can also be energetic they calm down!!! unlike the JR that will go all day lol

I used to have two dogs, a labx and a mongrel they used to have access to outdoors and they used to be left in work times.

I have to be honest if you were going to get a pup I would say consider two. And in that case consider a smaller dog - less food and less banging around!!

Are you dead set on these two breeds? If you PM me I could help you choose as i work for a rescue centre that could help.
