15.1 Heavy cob mare, fit in good condition, no health issues, 10 inches of bone......

Assuming a fair rider with decent balance - able to 'carry themselves', not slamming around etc

Opinions please

up to 14 - 15 stone if ridden considerately?

I am basing this on show cobs, which I believe the lightweights should be capable of carrying up to 14stone, and the heavy weights over 14 stone....

Fit with ten inches of bone with good confo I would say quite a bit , hesitant to put a figure on it because it really depends on the rider and the horse. I would say 16st plus happily.

It's easy! 20% including tack

I wouldn't say it was that 'easy' at all, very limited research has suggested that is a threshold beyond which damage can be done, and recorded, immediately but there are no long term studies.

And obviously overweight horses should be carrying lighter riders, not heavier ones...

Are you thinking of a specific rider OP?

Don't weight tapes normally under weigh? My hubby who is 15stone rides a 15'1 cob who has at least that much bone. They hack for at least an hour or two with trotting and cantering. His saddle is a 3 stone western saddle. Cobs back is checked every six months and we have never had a problem. Hope this helps

these threads generate lots of different calculations and suggestions, but without seeing a pic of horse and rider together, together with the rider's weight and height details, who knows ??

It's really risky giving answers , as sooo many people will just see the "highest weight" and think that they are ok.

Rider swings from 15 to 15 and a half stone but doesn't 'look' this weight iykwim - has been told time and time again that they 'look' right on the mare, trainer says mare isn't struggling at all, working forward, nice outline, keen to work, balanced etc.

But might she do long term damage to the horse at this weight? Should a horse continually carry their maximum?

If the mare is working well then I'd take that as her saying that she is happy enough :) I would probably be even more stringent about checking saddle fit/back/making sure the mare stayed at a healthy weight/reasonable level of fitness etc. than usual, but I don't think that 15 stone ish on a fit, healthy, sturdy cob is likely to cause any long term issues :)
