So after glancing through a few threads about keeping horses alone I began to worry!

Sandy was ASBO'd at our yard and put on individual turnout after he kept harassing the horses that he was turned out with, the final straw came when he physically pounced on another horse as he was rolling :o

Also he does stand right behind horses and chew their rugs and tails, sadly he has also got many a kick this way as he just doesn't move!

So anyway, he has been on individual turnout for about 9/10 months now and he appears as happy as always. The paddock is a good size and there is only electric fence between him and his neighbor in the next field, they can rub noses and interact over the fence with ease as it's only electric tape.

I've never thought anything of it, like I say his paddock is a good size so that he can gallop and yahoo round as much as he likes, and he can interact with another horse in the next field. He has always seemed just as happy in an individual paddock as he has in a field.

I guess I just wanted to run that by people, and be told that I'm being paranoid. :o

Why are you paranoid? he has company, albeit over a fence.
My lad is also a bully, last yard we were at gave my two a field to themselves,
luckily we now have them at home. Anyone with cures for bullying please speak up

Ah that's really good to hear :D

I've just read a few threads and comments recently which made me worry!

Your horse obviously missed out on the social graces when he was growing up!

I don't think you need to be paranoid as he isn't being kept alone, he's got all his mates around him, he just can't get at them!

Being kept completely alone in a field with no other horses within sight or sound is what I call being kept alone - and it's not good for any horse.

Don't feel sorry for him and let him back with others! I have a PITA horse who just always wants to play. He used to run up and down the fence line and tear the electric down to get in with the others, so I gave in and let the 4 of them stay out together, well, he obviously took it a step too far and got himself kicked (badly). Needless to say, he is never, ever going out with the others again (in fact I feel inclined to never let him out again :D )

Don't feel bad, you are being a responsible horse owner and doing the best for your horse and others as well! Much different than total isolation.

My mare is on her own as she is skinny and the other big mare keeps her away from the hay, plus I want to feed her hard feed. Just makes life easier. They will be back together in the summer. She doesn't care and seems to prefers a fence between them and her anyway.

Your horse, your decision so don't worry about it. Mine are now all in individual fields = less injuries and less lost shoes. Ideal...probably not, do I care what others think...no, does it work for us and our horses...yes...simples!!
