I think my boy has gastric ulcers, but I am in the middle of changing vets so I cant get him scoped straight away

Just wondering how his diet is for managing gastric ulcers (to help if he does have them)

He is fed on

Speedibeet
Benevit
Micronised Linseed
Apple Cider Vinegar

He has a lot of haylage/hay at night.

Any improvements I can make?

Mine has suspected ulcers too, but because the diet I am feeding him seems to have solved the symptoms, my vet has said not to bother scoping him for the time being, unless he starts to suffer from symptoms again.
You basically want to be feeding a high oil, high fibre, low starch diet.
Alfalfa is excellent, it has a good % of calcium so can help "buffer" acid in the gut, obviously it is also a good source of fibre. Speedibeet is good aswell, so worth sticking with that! My vet has advised to stick with Alfa A oil, Speedi beet and corn oil, as it is high in energy for any workload, but obviously has no starch in it. As much hay you can get down him is good too! Some hayledge can be slightly acidic, so worth getting yours checked out. As many different varieties of fibre as possible can help!

Mine has been on 2 scoops of Alfa A oil twice a day, a full scoop of speedibeet split between two feeds, and calm and condition as it is relativey high in oil, low in starch and keeps weight on him. I also make sure he is fed some fibre (hay or Alfa A) before being ridden, as it keeps a layer of fibre in his gut and stabilises any possible acid.

I'd immediately start him on a course of Coligone which is specifically made for horses prone to gastric problems and stressy tums in general. If you PM H's Mum she can help you as she has in depth knowledge of Coligone. My boy had a bout of gassy colic and he was put on a maintenance dosage for a few days after the Buscopan injection and it worked a treat. He has a preventative dose every time he is due to experience anything that may challenge his gut, ie moving fields, box rest. Coligone is prescribed by vets. I'm nothing to do with the company, just hoping to help by sharing experience of a product that really works x

Thanks everyone

I have used Coligone before but never really kept up the dose since I didnt have too much dosh at the time.

I was thinking of changing him to Winergy but he has so many supplements for joints etc that I doubt he would eat them based on chaff!

At my vet's suggestion I use Equine America's U-Gard Plus & it's worked really well for us. The other product they suggest is Coligone but his lordship won't touch it no matter what I try.

I'd be a bit wary of the cider vinegar as vinegar is acidic & you're trying to reduce stomach acidity.
