Ok guys, following my post from the weekend, am I too big for my pony?

I finally managed to get some footage of me on my pony. I have been told I am too big (heavy). Most people's replies on here were positive however no-one had an actual pic to compare. So I have now uploaded a video of me riding him. I am nervous of showing this especially as this is the second lesson I have had on him.

To recap, I am 5"5 9st8 he is 14h NF gelding. He's 5 in May.

So guys, what do you think?

yes i think your too big and that you should give him to me cos he looks lovely and i want him!
just kidding! i think you look really good on him and you should continue to bring him on and you would both enjoy it! x
 
Man alive if YOU are too big then i must have been positively SQUISHING my NF for the past 9 years!!! No of course you aren't too big - you do need to sit up though!
 
You don't look too heavy, but to me you do look quite tall on the pony, not helped by the body protector which makes the top half look much larger (and I don't mean big or fat or anything like that, I mean that your top half looks larger than it is because of the BP!).

I know! Its the second lesson I had on him and really nervous he was going to explode at any moment. The foetal position is the one for me! I keep having to whisper to myself sit up sit up deep breaths he won't bomb off!
 
No, I don't think you're too big. Your leg length is fine, your upper body looks tall on him (but that's not a reason to sell him, that's if you're being picky!) but I think that's because the pony looks quite immature still. Once he muscles up the picture will be lovely! :)
 
You look great, have seen much bigger/heavier people riding smaller horses!!!

If anyone tells you otherwise they are just jealous and potentially desire your lovely pony. Actually now I think about it you look SHOCKING!!
 
A tad too tall as in your back looks tall but your leg looks ok - stirrups are relatively long in the video? But defo not too heavy. If the pony seems happy then don't worry. Certainly not too tall to ride him and as he fills out you will look more balanced (height ratio wise). I've found with my kids that when they get to be about your height on their 13.2 / 14 hh ponies that their balance changes when they ride, and at this point they tend to look too big, but it hasn't been a reason for moving onto something bigger. Enjoy him, hes a sweetie.

Agree with the above,
you look great on him. Keep him definately and your older mare.
 
Agree with everyone else. You look fine!!! As already said - you'll look even better once pony is more balanced and muscles in the right place. Enjoy your very Sweet pony x
 
Yes he should muscle up and mature a lot - NFs seem to be the warmbloods of the pony world, late to mature and stop growing. A friend of mine used to buy a couple of 3 or 4yo NF ponies each year to bring on and sell - they were unrecognisable a couple of years later!
 
I'm another who thinks that you are absolutely fine on him. I was expecting to see your feet round his knees. :D;):D As others have said, you do look a bit tall atm but as he develops muscles and balance this will change. Keep him and enjoy yourselves.
 
To my eye you look a little tall for him but definitely not too heavy. The main thing though is that you feel comfortable on him.

I used to ride my 13.2 hh Highland pony and my daughter's 14.2 hh Dales pony and I am just over 5'8" tall.

Thanks. I do feel comfortable on him, if a little unbalanced. But I think that will improve. I am glad people don't think I am too heavt that was my main concern. I'd hate to think he was struggling.
 
He's definitly got some muscling up to do!

I got my boy (I posted piccies the other day) as an unbroken 7 yr old and he was a similar fine build, a year or so later of proper work he had chunked out into the pictures I posted the other day (although he was 15/16 in those photos). He was a Merrie, which aren't your chunky forresters compared to your willloways/farriers (not that they're chunky, foresters aren't meant to be, but you know what I'm saying)

Sorry I don't have any photos on the computer of what he looked like as a 7 yr old, but I used to look a lot bigger on him then than I did in those photos I posted.

(argh posting this has made me remember how much I miss him. :( Honsetly they are the best ponies you could ever wish for!)



I think you feel unbalanced only because he still looks quite green.... I can feel like that on my new 15hh big moving just broken sports horse
 
I do feel NFs are my favourites at the moment. My TB mare is a stunner but he is just so cheeky and funny with it. Allot of that is do to with his age. He's also very bright which I heard is an NF trait. They are just lovely.
 
Hi OP, I was 5'4" and 9 1/2 stone at 16, I broke in a 12.2 fat welshie A, who had no trouble carrying me. Continued growing upwards and now many many years later and 5'6" and still weigh the same, recently rode a 14hh native type mare to try out for a friends children. The mare had not been ridden for 2 years, so only did a little potter, but she didn;t bend in the middle or object in any way. My extra height is in my legs, so usually ride something taller to avoid kicking themin the knee, but you look fine, and the weight is no problemn for your pony. :)
