OK - I give up.....

Defender? I thought they were pretty heavy on the fuel? I need to take into account that I have a 20 mile motorway journey to work and then back each day, so it's got to be one of those 4x4's that runs on fresh air....you know the ones?

Defenders are brilliant (i am bias though). But probably not the ideal vehicle to do the motorway running.I have heard the Isuzu and Maverick/Terrano 4x4 are not that bad to run fuel wise and would definately pull what you need it too.

I have a small lorry but it won't fit my horse in it! I would need a 7.5 tonne and I wouldn't get one of those onto the yard (tight entrance). I'll have to do a bit more investigating from the looks of things

If you are after just a cheaper, good 4x4, how about a daihatsui (sp?) fourtrak. Very cheap to pick up and very very cheap to run fuel wise!! They may not be huge in size but are quite sufficiently powerful for the job. Not that luxurious but hey! it's got us to lots of events nice and cheaply!!

I tow with a Maverick or a Terrano (have one of each) and both are excellent tow cars. Really cope with the weight of tow horses and my old Ifor really well. With one horse I can barely feel any difference in the drive.

Only does about 27mpg though with a 2.7tdi engine. We rarely notice any difference in consumption even when towing.

I'm quite pleased with my Nissan Terrano - I have a Y reg, so newer shape and just misses the high tax bracket....pulls 2 horses and an Ifor 510 easily...

We have a fourtrak too, love it. Go for one a bit newer if possible the suspension was changed and the difference in ride is massive.
