Have you thought of trying "western"? I know at least three people who have been down the same road as you - horrifying accidents but loved horses too much to give it up - and have found the peace they need by changing to western riding. It's not just the security of a big saddle (but that helps!) but the western way is altogether more relaxed and, contrary to popular belief, we're not a bunch of wannabe cowboys. Have a look on www.theversatilehorse.com and see what you think...
I thought this was the answer to my confidence issues, maybe I had the wrong instructor who was a total perfectionist but I found that as it was so different I had the added pressure of having to think left hand down a bit, right leg back a bit rather than the habitual just doing things on a subconscious level which used to make me flustered which I never was riding english.
It came to a head for me when i had a lesson in the UK and realised I was not nearly as nervous as I was during my western lessons.
I ended up going on a two day confidence course (if you are interested PM me and I will give you details) which finally got me back on the straight and narrow.
Good instructor and a selection of horses you can move up to as your confidence improves has been the the answer for me.
I too am looking for a paragon of sainted virtue which I can just go and enjoy alongside my more tricky horse who you need to be 100% on the ball at all times on.
