I posted a very bad pic a few days ago askin for a conformation critique, i have since taken a new one. anyway i thought i'd turn this into a before and after too....

my mare arrived from a dealers yard looking like a charity case. this is her 4 months after arriving (one month after i bought her) after 2 farrier visits, worming and a few months on hard feed:

any general thoughts on her conformation?
also her condition.. would you say she needs a bit more weight on her? i can still sometimes see her ribs a bit when shes cantering loose in the field.

She's a very nice little horse isn't she??

What are you feeding her? I would like to see a lot more condition and bloom on her if she were mine.

She was on

2 scoops barley a day
2 scoops pony nuts a day
2 scoops mollichaff a day
1 scoop speedibeet a day

i'm in the process of swapping the pony nuts for conditioning cubes, and am adding soya oil and pink powder with ad-lib hay so hopefully she will pick up a bit more soon.

Needs a bit more condition and shine but looking better than the first photo. Try adding some maize oil and some linseed cake to her feed. Im sure that once the spring grass comes through she will improve 100%-they dont call grass 'Doctor Green' for nothing

. Keep up the good work. M.

You are feeding a lot of grub in two feeds by the sounds of it. Have you thought about splitting the ration in to three or even four feeds.

Is she out or in?

ur find one the grass perks up then you notice the difference (get electric fencing on stand by)

make sure your not feeding no more then 4lb in one feed

shes in 24/7 atm to try and let the grass grow as we have limited grazing but she gets out for a few hours every other day

i feed her twice a day but thats YO's policy... think the other horses would kick their stables down if i fed her again. technically shes on full livery but i work at the yard, however don't have much say over feeding times etc.

forgot to add..... what is linseed cake and where can i buy it?

what!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

shes your horse right dont let anyone else tell you what you can and cannot do if the horse needs feeding 2- three feeds aday so what dont deprive the horse cause the yo has different rules tell her to get lost

Mmmmm, sorry, but I'm not sure that anyone can dictate when you feed your horse.

The others won't mind once they get used to the idea that they're not getting fed as well. And providing you don't make a fuss, they probably won't even notice.

Yeah I got that, was trying to eat toast at same time as post so brain power/ability to type were a bit reduced!

thanks for advice though

now any thoughts on her conformation?

I agree she looks lovely. Bit more neck and bum needed, but that will come. As for the feeds make up the lunch feed at the same time as breakfasts and even leave it somewhere else. Then you don't have to do into the feed rooma nd bang about which will get the others exited.

if i ever need to be giving a horse an extra meal that the others aren't getting then i sneak it into the stable under a rug, so they don't see it.
works everytime!
you will get a better improvement feeding little and often.

Orr bless, she does look a lot better, I'ms sure during the summer when she's had some time on the spring/summer grass she'll look a different horse again.

Remember nothing can subtitute good quality grass and hay.

....a suppliment like CLOP, will give her a beautiful coat, conditioning cubes will help with her topline providing you work her correctly too, Dengie Alfa A and a huge bucket of Spillers Ready Grass every night, a month on that and she will really blossom and won't hot up neither.

To me she looks like she is in great condition weight wise though I would start to get her to build up some muscle in her topline (neck, back, bum) and let the spring grass do the rest. She shouldn't be too well covered as it won't help her when she's starting work. She looks like she has pretty good conformation, if I'm being really picky her pasterns are a little long, but otherwise whe looks great.
