OK now enough is enough - rant!

How would you feel if your horse has been turned out with a horse who has conjunctivities for the last 2weeks - wasn't even told and Rocks came in with weeping eyes today and another livery said 'oh didnt you know his field mate has conjunctivitis'
When I asked YM was told "oh yeh he did but its cleared up now". That doesnt matter if its cleared up now he still could have given it to Rocks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rant over. Really now just hoping it was the flies bothering him that made his eyes weep rather than anything more sinister - have now put on fly mask to see if it improves.

The fact is a horse with a contagious disease should be kept in isolation not turned out with others!! grrr

Well, yes, but flies probably would be the transmitters/infecters or whatever and it would be difficult to prevent except by use of a fly mask thingy.

Yes but him being isolated would stop the contagiousness (is that a word?) considerably and they should have told me - this horse and my horse play together all the time - rubbing faces etc. They should have told me.

I don't mean to trivialise, but that would be a tiny, TINY misdemeanor compared to some of the things I've had to put up with out here...

I do agree though that it is AT BEST incredibly inconsiderate not to let you know about it.

But on a yard of 9 horses when i'm on livery and the horse in question is YMs horse? I can't believe why no one else isn't as furious as I am - if Rock has caught it I will not be happy at all and they will be paying for the treatment

yes because they are full of anti oxidants and cooling so will relieve itchiness and swelling!

The vet would probably prescribe chloramphenicol ointment - you can get it over the counter now at pharmacies. That's what I have used for conjunctivitis in the past. But be careful - eye infections can be very serious and horrible. Get your vet if you are worried

Thanks M_M I'm gonna keep an eye on it (hehe) this week and if it doesn't improve with the fly mask or if it gets cloudy i'll get the vet.
Also don't like how the YM is trying to cover it up - saying he had a weepy eye but not conjunctivitis - when he had the vet prescribe the ointment you're on about. Hmph.

I would be very annoyed. I find it unbelieveable that a horse with a contagious disease is allowed out with other horses.
I hope hes ok and it is just the flies x

I hope it is nothing, but I also suggest cold tea on eyes. It certainly won't do him any harm if there is nothing wrong with his eyes. Fingers crossed its nothing

K and R - be very careful about conjunctivits especially if it fails to clear quickly. I'd get the vet and get an antibiotic cream but again, be VERY careful how you put ANYTHING into a horse's eye. My horse had chronic conjunctivits, totally unmanaged by his riding school owners. I bought him, they said he was sound as a pound and now and then (ha!) they put cold tea on his eyes. 3 weeks later he's in a specialist equine eye hospital with a clouded over eye and a diagnosis of superficial keratitis. Long 6 months of desperately trying to save the eye, then it had to be removed. £4,000 and thank god I'd sorted the insurance out fast! And he STILL has intermittent conjunctivitis in his remaining eye and it is excluded from the insurance cover, natch! Do hope it resolves fast. x

We have a horse on our yard which has effectively hayfever, when she first arrived she had cloudy half closed eyes. My vet looked at her we had the antibiotic eye stuff to start with as it looked like conjuntivitis. It wasn't turned out to be the allergic reaction and she is on human hayfever eye drops, and wears a fly mask during the day which also helps. Her eyes now are perfectly normal.

As a livery yard manager I find it hard to believe that your YM knowingly turned your Horse out with another who had a contagious disease. How irrisponsible! Are you absolutlely sure that your YM knew? What was the disease if you dont mind me asking. I hope your boy is ok? What did your YM say when you challenged him/her about it? (I,m assuming you did).

I didn't challenge her about it, i'm not v confrontational in person. Horse he was turned out with had conjunctivitis, and although YM said it was just a weepy eye, the young boy that owns the horse told me it was full blown and had to be medicated. Just wish i'd been told as the amount of problems my boy has the last thing I needed was conjunctivitis! He did get it but luckily, we caught it at the mild uninfectious stage and its now all fine.
I don't think it was at all purposeful, I just think she/owners of horse didn't think that's all but it did really annoy me.
