Ok, Ok, I take it all back - perhaps collies are useful!

My son getting a collie seemed to me to be ridiculous - we are a working gundog family not shepherds!

We don't own any sheep - collies are useless in this household............or so I thought!

During this evening's walk (all one and half miles of it in the pitch black by torchlight ) Rosie found a cock pheasant and brought it to me

I am convinced she thinks she is a spaniel and I can see that with a bit of training she will come in useful afterall

Last Saturday we had the Shooting Gazette out with us on the shoot (looking forward to that issue!) but just imagine if I had had a collie working with me!!

Looking forward to next year's season now.........watch this space

My dad always says he reckons good beating dogs should be trained like sheepdogs, she's just proving you only need one dog to do both, and some picking up to boot!

Ha ha - my Dad has labs and I have a Border Collie.

My BC will retrieve all day long and has really started to use his nose in the woods. Its quite funny when I go and visit my Dad and the two labs are working the covers accompanied by my Collie - who is actually getting quite good at blind retrieves too.

The only downside being that he is a bit hard mouthed so I doubt we'll ever pick up on a shoot but its good to know he can give the labs a run for their money from time to time

teehee, they banned the collies from taking part in the scurry at the gamefair we go to, they hold an agility final there in the main ring. My chum won a great selection of clothing winning it with her BC, who had never done a proper retrieve in his life
