I have a bulldog boy and would love a frenchie but I am horrified at the price difference between boys and girls. I need a girl because I think my boy would accept her easier, not to breed from her.

Would / do people really pay £2,500 - £3,500 for a female puppy ?

I've never even paid that for a horse! I cannot understand why there is a difference in price asked between bitches and dogs, it seems to be a fairly new idea, certainly something I have never done.

I have seen a lot of that recently, and is it to do with breeding? Obviously you can get more out of a bitch than you can with a dog.

And lots of £300 unregistered, £350 registered ads about

Dear lord......my friend jsut rescue a one for free.
I certainly would not.....these prices are prob aimed and no doubt sought from people wanting to breed.....at this price a puppy u can retire at an early age.....maybe an idea to buy a few(not you) breeders so they can also profit after the caeserean

OMG she's lucky, please give me a shout if any more are needing a home.

What part of the country are you LHS? There seems to be a French Bulldog Welfare Trust with contacts in a few different areas, they may know of any in need of homes.

I'm down south, I would never have thought of Frenchie rescue because they're so expensive I can't imagine anyone not selling them on if they can't keep them.

When I bought my late Smooth Collie 1993, the bitches cost the Collie club's recommended price but the males was 1 000 SEK less (about 82,02 GBP). But then Smooth Collies are a small breed, most people wants "real" Lassie's = Rough Collies and I don't remember seeing that happen in any other breed at that time.

But in general it seems to be strong trends in Sweden about what gender the buyers wants, sometimes and in some breeds, people mainly wants to buy bitches, other times and in other breeds, people mainly wants dogs. Since I believe most breeders would rather be left with an unsold bitch puppy than an unsold male puppy, that to me explains why I've only ever seen that the male puppies can be cheaper to buy than the bitch puppies but never the other way around.

OMG!

I just checked what 2 500 - 3 500 £ is in Swedish kronor, *gasp* between about 30 460 - 42 650 SEK...

As a comparison, you can get a very good laptop that you can play all the latest games on, for between 6 000 and 9 000 SEK. Actually if you don't want a laptop without a horse, you can sometimes find an off the track Trotter for that same amount of money.

I suppose it is all about supply and demand, I would say that the average price over here on purebred puppies, for most breeds, are from 8 000 to 14 000 SEK (about 656 - 1 148 GBP), some small and/or popular breeds can cost more.

Currently the French Bulldog club in Sweden is recommending a price between 13 000 - 17 000 SEK (about 1 066 - 1 395 GBP) to their breeders. So they are not cheap here either but if you really want one, maybe it could be worth looking into what costs are involved in importing a puppy/dog?

LOL yes even I was shocked, I knew they were expensive but not that much, although these prices are from what I would call responsible breeders, i'm sure if I looked I could get something puppy farmed for cheaper but thats a no no in my book ( don't want to encourage these people ).

Hadn't thought about import tbh. I do know a breeder that imported from Holland and she paid £3,000 there for a nice Pied puppy so for the right animal not always cheaper I don't think.

I've found a study (from the early nineties) showing that French Bulldogs in Sweden have 43% caesareans and 57% natural births and a later study showing that they have an average litter size of 4,61 puppies per litter.
Both SKK and a Swedish animals right law says that you're not allowed to breed a bitch again if she has had 2 caesareans.

I doubt there is any point for me to run out and buy myself a French Bulldog bitch, thinking I can make Cayla's master plan come true = breed it and then retire and live on the money. Read the following and weep...

Since I'm the sort of person who does consider that my bitch can belong to the "minority", my bitch could need to have 2 caesareans and maybe I then got 9 puppies altogether, that I would want 15 000 SEK for each = 135 000 SEK (about 11 078 GBP)!

My insurance company does not pay for caesareans on three breeds and French Bulldog are one of those (Boston Terrier and English Bulldog are the other two), so I would have to pay for the caesareans myself (they are not done cheap in Sweden) so suddenly there might only be about 100 000 SEK (about 8 206 GBP) left.

Then the owner/owners of the stud dog/dogs will want 10% of the price of each puppy = 1 500 SEK x 9 puppies = 13 500 SEK less in my pocket = 86 500 SEK (about 7 098 GBP) left.

Before breeding I have had to pay for the brood bitch to be checked by a vet for patella luxation and she also needs to check her heart, then I have to pay for the extra food that the brood bitch needs when she is pregnant and lactating, pay for the puppy food that the puppies need, before selling the puppies I have to pay for the puppy vet check + vaccination and ID marking...

Hm, wonder what it can be left now, 50 000 SEK (about 4 103 GBP) perhaps? How long retirement do I get for that?

By the way, Boston Terriers in Sweden have according to another study from the nineties, 61,8% caesareans and 38,2% natural births. But one breeder who 10 years ago began x-raying the pelvis of all her potential brood bitches before deciding if they would be bred from or not, have not had a caesarean birth on her bitches since.

Another approach that have proven making the number of caesareans decrease, is to simply only use dogs and bitches in breeding who have themselves been born naturally.

***FinnishLapphund wonders how many French Bulldogs she would actually have to buy and responsibly breed to be able to live without needing to worry about money for the rest of her life...***
