Well after a cracking weekend dressage, if she continues to do well I want to affiliate. Just think it much more time worthy and beneficial..i.e points, championships etc.

So when do you decide to affiliate?

I was getting placed consistently at Trailblazers so decided to take the plunge and have so far done ok, hit a blip at the moment but heyho thats life. I was encouraged also to affliate by people on here and have to say the support from here is great.

When unaffiliated judging starts to really p!$$ you off...?

Seriously though: I think when you're comfortable with what you're doing unaff. Its very easy to give BD a go at prelim and at at novice with a ticket, what's the worst that can happen? - you'll get more constructive comments and at best more consistent marking! If you're getting high 60s at unaff you should def. give it a go but there's no reason not to try if you're not getting such high marks...

[/ QUOTE ]....those pesky blips - they only jump on you after a run of good scores, dont they? I think they are natures way of preventing the 'too big for your boots syndrome'

Yes funny that, red rossie last time this time it was all pants. Have definately come back to earth with a bump although I'm convinced Patrick is still laughing. I just looked at the photos from Sat and I swear you can see it in his face all through the test. Little ***. Fingers crossed yours and my blips don't last too long.

I am interested in seeing the replies to this... I have a rising 6 year old who has now been in work for five months and it's time we started getting out and about. But there are not that many good unaffiliated ones around here and quite a few BD competitions.

When Reashi was winning or getting high placings every time out at unaffiliated. He too hit a blip at BD going under 60% (shock horror) at one point, but then we got our own back next outing winning with over 70% at novice and elementary and featuring in H&H, my claim to fame! I think it will be a long while before my new horsie is ready for affiliated though, I have more hope with Afro!

Hard to give a definate answer- basically when you feel you want to- could be for a number of reasons;

Want consistent judging by trained judges
Want better venues- sometimes?
Want to compete in the BD structure gaining points etc
Want to chance to qualify for areas or regionals
Access to regional training

I would expect your marks to drop when you begin affiliated (not all the time but sometimes unlisted judges can be overgenerous) and I know people that dropped 5-10% when they affiliated. So if you are consistent achieving mid 60's then give it a go- I'm sure you wont regret it!

Another BD/dressage question please for all you in the know:

I get better marks in Eventing Dressage than Unaff pure generally - although mostly over 60% unaff Dressage.

Is Eventing Dressage marked more generously do you think? I presume at BE PN level they use listed judges anyway?

I would go when you want better judging/comments in order to progress.

When you are not wasting your money joining BD, i.e you are going to get out and get on with it, if you only go out occasionally then buy class tickets

Oh this is good...I was about to post a very similar post

I actually went to watch a small local affiliated dressage show at the weekend and it gave me the inspiration to have a go. I would mainly have a go to get a better judges perspective of how we go. I would say find a venue that you would go to and go along and watch. Get a feel for the place and the competition.....and go for it. What have you got to lose????

I am going to do a prelim by the end of the summer

I have just bitten the bullet and sent of my BD forms last week. Now getting a total attack of the self doubts. I live on teh isle of Man so our affiliated comps are run with our unafiliated comps. I was scoring consistently 68% - 72% at prelim and 64%+ in novice so we have moved up to novice/elementary. I have my first affiliated comp on 7 May and am moving myself back to prelim and novice but I feel like Im not good enough to be doing it. Im sure once I come to TB & North West Regionals (obviously if I qualify for them!) I will feel a bit better. Im going to work my butt off now ive got a field to ride in again and feel like I deserve to be going to these competitions.
