Hi all,

This might seem like a ridiculous question but I need to inject pencillin into a horse (in fact I have done one dose already), but it suddenly occured to me afterwards that maybe I shoudln't have done as I have an allergy to it myself?
Of course I didn't actually get any of it on myself and would try not to accidently inject it into me(!), but I just wondered if anyone knew of any general guidelines on this. Is it safe for me to carry on administering it?

Thanks in advance!

I would avoid handling it as any contact with it could potentially result in a reaction. If you can't get someone else to do it foryou it might be worth asking your vet for another type of antibiotic drug.

I have the same problem as you! I would say it depends on how allergic you are to it? In my case, a small drop on the skin could potentially kill me so I don't take the risk and get someone else to inject it for me.

Gosh not sure. I'm allergic too. Best bet would be to ask the vet for advice. My previous yard owner wouldn't inject my horse with depo provera as it could cause either fertility problems or abortion (can't remember which) and she was trying for a baby at the time. She said a little accidently on her skin could be dangerous so if that's anything to go by give it a wide berth if at all possible. Is there no one else who can do it for you?

Great thanks for all your answers!! I think I will definitely ask someone else to do it or at least wear gloves.
And if I happen to get a so-called 'official' answer from the vet I will let you know what it is!

Thanks for your help guys.
