Ok so bought an ancient land rover series 3 to tow horse.

Now reading on website:

Category B vehicles may be coupled with a trailer up to 750kgs MAM (allowing a combined weight up to 4.25 tonnes MAM) or a trailer over 750kgs MAM provided the MAM of the trailer does not exceed the unladen weight of the towing vehicle, and the combination does not exceed 3.5 tonnes MAM.

NOw if im reading that correctly my landrover weighs 2.6tons ,my horse weighs no more then half ton, so if i get a trailer for him which weighs under half a ton (like a single horse trailer) i can the still drive it on my driving licence. Does anyone know if this is correct??

With a Series 3 you are good for 3 tons on the back!

Used to two 2 polo ponies and a 1ton 510 ifor with mine, pretty slow up the hills, but does the job.

Only thing I would say is watch your braking distance as the brakes on the Series 3 are usually drum and a bit crap.

You need old persons licence to tow anything or take the new trailer test!

no this is what it says for some like me with only a cat B that as long as in complete total weight of car trailer, horse and junk doesn't exceed 3.5 in total (MAM) then thats ok with out taking the test.

Nope you won't be able to tow without taking the test (B+E I think), the MAM for even a single trailer will be over 1500kgs I would expect, then once you've added the MAM of your car you'll be over the 3.5 ton mark. Its not how much everything weighs that counted, its the maximum that trailer and car could weight, whether you tow them empty or with 2 shires.

Our 2002 Freelander has towed an ivor williams horse box with a 16.2hh and 17hh horse. Also has taken 2 of my heavy cobs

Cobland - your comment really worries me!
A freelander tows 1.8t

Assuming small ifor 505 = 905kg
17hh horse = 700kg
16.5hh = 650kg

So thats 2,255kg

You were 455kg OVER the legal limit of a freelander.

Now whilst a freelander will tow this no problems, had you got in an accident you wouldn't have been insured and also if you'd been stopped by the police you would have been prosecuted.

Bear in mind you can tow beyond the legal kerbweight of your car - won't damage the car - BUT its illegal and if you wouldn't normally drive without tax and insurance don't try this!

Oh for goodness sake is there anyway of getting round this ridiculous situation without taking a test!!
I need to get places with my horse and how can i??

Surley a 3.5ton horse box is not actually 3.5ton in weight its just up to that?!!?

I think to be safe you've got to take the towing test. I tried working out a way round it like you but horses weigh too much. MAM is maximum authorised mass & 750kg is weight of trailer plus contents which with a horse (500kg) only leaves 250kg for the trailer which isn't going to happen. I found someone to give me a lesson & then took the test. Had practised reversing & driving on roads with my dad alongside before hand. Think it cost me about 250 quid with test fee & lessons so not cheap! Love my freedom now tho. Only other option is a small horsebox (max weight 3.5t).

Only way to do it is to take you test. I did a few years ago and glad I did - I now have no worries and know I can tow anything. The test was introduced for a reason and even though I had to pay for it I still think it's a fab idea and do believe the police need to clamp down even harder on those towing without having done it or overweight.
