Okay, howabout this horse for me?

looks great to me... go for it

It worries me when an advertising is listed as private - when they are trade.

There's nothing about that advert that would entice me to go and see the horse I'm afraid.

Yep, already did that and discovered they were based in Ashford. Is it a problem that they trade but list as private - I've seen a few who do that - thought perhaps they paid different rates to advertise.

Well the first thin you find out about them is that they are dishonest when it comes to placing ads. Why would you then trust them to be honest about a horse?

Also if you are buying from a dealer then you are (should be) getting some comeback if there's a problem however if you buy from a dealer who sells you the horse as a private invididual or "on behalf of a client" you have no comeback.

I think it does matter. Implying that they are private when they are trade has nothing to do with how much they may pay to advertise - and everything to do with wanting to hide the fact that they are dealers.

There is nothing wrong with dealers - and there are many out there with great reputations. To try and hide the fact implies (to me) less than honest sellers.

Also, why does the mare have a grackle on? It's advertised as quiet.

Why no decent confo shots?

This horse buying lark is just fraught with pit falls - I don't think I'm ever going to get it right.

I need to find an 'expert' to go out there and find me a horse - any volunteers???

I thought this, but I can't see clearlyand I'm not up on the names of tack - and a martingale?

Word of mouth is good! Have a look on your local pony club website and see if there's anything suitable there. I don't mean just www.pcuk.org but whatever the branch's website is. The thing is that ponies advertised on there should be known by someone in the branch who can say "yup it's nice" or "Christ no it's a nutter".

As for this one advertised by the dealer. If you love the look of it ring up and ask them whether you will be getting full dealer terms with it - ie that it's not for sale on behalf of a client. Ask what their warranty period is etc and then get someone to go with you to see it. Don't just fall in love and buy it!

Make sure you also get it vetted and then test it out well when you get it home, together with your instructor or an experienced person to help.

Must admit I thought that too - but wasn't 100% sure, because the photo is so bad.

Dont get too dejected Holly B. I think the perfect horse finds you. Mine looked at me from the pages of horse and hound and Horse Deals and I just knew. I wasnt even looking at the time, just window shopping, and now im stuck with the little bugger. Take your time, your horse is out there!

Thank you Kat, I can't believe how 'caught up' in this I have become. I have viewed some lovely horses, but there always seems to be 'something' not quite right. I had a few ups and downs
smile.gif

I'm almost 46 and have reached a point where I feel that if I don't do it now I never will.

Here's hoping - Holly B

You will!!! I was window shopping for an experienced arab or TB type, but apparently a little andalusian x welsh, unbroken 3 year old decided he was my horse. I had no choice in the matter.

Like I said, take your time - i spent a month after seeing mine advertised thinking about him non-stop (I am apparently a fluffy type, hard as I try not to be), then up the ad popped again and i couldnt help myself.

(Dont get me wrong, he isnt the perfect horse, in fact hes a bit of a wild child, but he is definately my forever horse) Good luck!

second that you will! someone else locally had bought mine and I was annoyed I hadnt gone to see him when he turned up. 3 months down the line she sold him again as wasnt getting on with him. 4 years on and despite his quirks I wouldnt change him for the world. Worth taking your time in the first instance. We had seen about 12 horses in those 3 months and there was always something!

It would concern me that she seems to be lacking in condition - a lot of horses come over from Ireland quiet and then they get fed more by their new English owners and then they aren't so quiet anymore!

Looks like she has a mexican grakle and running martingale - doesn't concern me so much - except it doesn't match the "quiet" description of the advert.

Her sire is an Englsih TB who stood in Ireland from 2000 (& the sire of Ollie Magern) - obviously not highly rated as he got some fairly mediocre mares over there. Having said that, she's half TB..... with potentially the associated temperament - she looks more TB than ID

If you have the time to go look at some horses (not nec this one tho!), it would probably help you start to sort the wheat from the chaff - just get more experience in seeing lots of different types and work out what you want. Don't fall in love with everyone you see, take the advice of a neutral and experienced friend and have anything you buy thoroughly vetted.

then have fun!!

I would ask for more photos, as to me, the photo makes the horses conformation not look the best. Probably a really poor angle and not the best photo mind,,,,, but he looks to have a really wide chest, and a narrow back end with his legs closer together. Granted this may be because he is resting a leg, but it's a reason why I'd want more photos, especially without tack and no rider. I was always told to look for a leg at each corner

Sorry for sticking my beak in, and I do appreciate that there is oodles of terrifc advice on here. BUT...if you keep posting ads you will never go and see anything! EVERYTHING you post gets vetoed!

Bear in mind the people you are asking may be highly experienced, but also perhaps are not bearing your needs/planned workload for horse in mind.

I think you should go and see the nice older mare you posted about before. That ad looked genuine to me, and so did the mare - so what about her conformation, at that age does it matter?! If her conformation isn't perfect it pales in comparison to the knocks she may/may not have had by now! I wish you the very best of luck in finding a horse as I think you will give a terrific horse a super, loving home. Please go and see that mare, if she's still available

id steer clear of this one too, for the main reason others have said...its a dealer listed as private which just screams problems at me
frown.gif
sorry

but just to echo what a few others have said, i truly believe the horse finds you
i bought my first horse form a dealer and ave been through absolute hell with him (not too say all dealers are bad just there are some very dishonest ones) i have a list as long as my arm of problems with him and weve had to turn him away in the hope he will learn to be a horse again and wll again be rideable at somepoint....so i started looking for another horse as i was luckily in the right situation to get another, i saw numerous horses miles away many of which i knew werent right as soon as i saw them, some of which liked 2 of which i made an offer on and was let down by owners i gave up....then i got an email from a friend about a horse she knew of for sale, the email didnt detail much, no photo etc but only 30mins away, i took a chance and went to see him that was 5 months ago....hes the big bay horse in my siggy (Ted) and i love him to bits, he is a wonderful horse and i didnt look for him he found me

so dont give up

(sorry it was so long too)

Yes, but I think in some cases the opinions about certain dealers or dealers posing as private persons, is genuinely useful for the OPP to know in advance.

I do agree that some of the conformation critiques on here can some times being a bit over the top, and are perhaps un-necessarily off-putting in the case of some potentially perfectly useful fun horses - as not all of us need 3* event horses after all. Jeepers, the conformation of some of my first horses/ponies were horrendous back in the 70's and early 80's. And funnily enough all jumped big JA tracks perfectly well and NONE were ever sick or sorry. It's only now, when I have quality bred sport's horses in the 21st Century that there's always something or another wrong with them
