Okay so dogs you do like.

Totally agree re gsd back ends. When OH and I decided to get a dog we both liked them but had the same issue, we saw a lovely gsd x rottie that had a much straighter, stronger looking back which we both liked but he was in a rescue and they rejected us coz we worked.
My gsd x rottie got lots of compliments on her lovely straight strong back. Sadly her elbows were made of cream cheese :(

I like nearly all dogs, tbh. Definite soft spot for GSDs, rotties and huskies though.

Pomeranians…!
Boston terrors
Wirey lurchers
Ex racer greyhounds
English mastiffs (for other people not me)
Fox terriers
Diddy working cockers
Show cockers- roans
Labradors are special
toy terriers
Min pins

Almost everything really if it’s got basic manners.

Rough collies will always be number 1. I don’t keep any currently, not since losing my last, but I hope to again one day. Always the traditional/classic type, not just for the looks but find their temperaments vastly different to the modern type. It’s hard to explain just how lovely they are to have in your life. I miss mine everyday. Love the smooths too, from a good breeder.

Pembroke corgis, obviously. I can’t see us being without one now. I wouldn’t know what to do without one to boss me around.

Whippets and scruffy Lurchers. Australian shepherds. Keeshond.
Dandie Dinmonts & Norfolk Terriers. (Both are immensely charming). Tibetan spaniels & Paps (for my dotage!) Moderate Great Danes and lately I’ve really fallen for Havanese too, which isn’t my usual type I must admit!

I absolutely love and would kill for a Great Dane, I think they are beautiful and the ones I knew were were lovely- all the same line.

However its highly unlikely I'd ever even consider buying one. My training skills wouldn't be up to scratch for such a big animal and are they drooley? I think I remember them being a bit drooley. Also just practicaly. We won't forever have a big house on a farm and a GD may not fit in what we end up in!

Poodles and Red Setters. Red Setters are such beautiful dogs, never owned one but love them.

I grew up with 3 mad setters. One was a bit dim and managed to run into the glass patio doors and bounce them out of the frame. It was 40years ago and I can still see the patio door bouncing into the garden and all the adults running to catch it 😂 They are such gorgeous dogs with lovely temperaments. Ours were mad as hatters until the day we lost them.

I like most individual dogs but as I'm sure you all know I LOVE whippets in any shape or form. I've got one big, slightly thick dofus who is the perfect pet and who pretty much trained himself to be a medical detection dog. He spents his life converting people to whippets. And Ive got one total fire cracker working dog. Hes hardcore, well as hardcore as whippets get and super intelligent. A little bit like a pet velociraptor, no puzzle is too hard for him. He will run 2 miles at 30mph for fun, do a 20mile hike, work for 3 or 4 hours, race, swim etc, etc. Or he will walk round Oxford city on a lead. Then he goes home and gets into bed and is the quietest house pet.

Lurcher
Greyhound
Whippet (especially Italian)
Doberman
Nicely put together Rottie
Golden Retrievers - Is there a happier dog in the world?
Newfoundlands - Is there a gentler dog in the world?
Red Setter
Malanois - although I'm no where near experienced or available to exercise it enough

Really, no other Malamute fans on here? 😕
We have a Malamute, adopted as a 10yo, now 13. We love him dearly, but he’s been hard work. Very reactive to other dogs, but absolutely loves all humans. I wouldn’t say he’s put us off having another, but……

I love Collies. On my third, all taken in as older dogs needing a home. Would love a pup one day, but not while I work full time.

All 4 of our mutes have been great with other dogs. 3 have had good recall but Tala is a bit too much of a social butterfly to trust off lead. They've actually all been pretty easy ( few initial sporadic issues with Tala when we first got her but resolved fairly quickly), but the last 3 ( rescues) all came with a big list of issues from the rescue centre / previous homes and non of them really manifested themselves with us. OH will not consider any other breed now, then again how could you not fall in love with this.

My in-laws always have Danes. They are absolutely wonderful, gentle, kind dogs. Theirs haven't been particularly drooley and have generally been quite well trained. I'd have one in a heartbeat - but for the lifespan issue.

My last remaining 'bucket list' dog is a Pointer (English).

Dogs I love which I've owned or own;

Hungarian Vizsla
Bracco Italiano
English Springer Spaniel
GSP

Of those breeds I'd have another Bracco and another Vizsla in a heartbeat (though the latter seem to be on a downward trajectory becoming lighter of frame and more nervy).

Dogs I love which I'll probably never own;

Irish Wolfhound (lifespan too short)
Wire Fox Terrier and Schnauzer (not sure the terrier temperament is for me)

There are probably more on the breeds I love which is never own, tbh I like most dogs if the temperament is right.

it's interesting that the German Shepherd is coming up on this list almost as often as it did on the 'Breeds you don't like' one.

My best two dogs have been a German Shepherd and a Border Collie. I have got to the stage in life now where taking on another puppy of any breed is not going to happen and the risks of problems when taking on either breed when older are too great.

Now it is ex racing greyhounds all the way. Puppy problems are in the distant past and few problems caused by incorrect upbringing are likely. All the ones I have taken on have been aged 3-4 years old so plenty of lifespan left to enjoy them.

I promised pictures, so here are Pickle and Welly as ridiculously cute JRT puppies.
