Okidoki clone

Cells have been taken from Okidoki by the French company Cryozootech to create a clone of the deceased showjumper. That could mean his genes could be available for breeding.

I know its a touchy subject but would be intrigued to know what people think of this.

I think its nice to be able to do it and like you say, have his genes for future generations.

If i could afford it i'd clone my past ponies

As long as it doesn't damage the gene pool or hurt stud farming and books, I don't see why not. As long as people don't expect exactly the same horse: environment and handling are important and can alter temperament, and obviously the quality of training and bringing on will be important too. Given that it's hard to pass some traits on to the next generation (e.g. it's easier to give showjumping ability to progeny, but dressage gaits are much more difficult), it could be made easier as DNA is cloned rather than combined with another animal's and in theory diluted 50%. Very though provoking stuff actually!

Oki Doki has amazing bloodlines. He is line bred to Viola B, one of the most outstanding mares in the world. Her motherline is also the motherline of Totilas, the amazing dressage stallion. It will be very interesting to see what sort of foals his clone produces.

I'm quite happy for it, I'll be watching with interest as my mare's grand dam is Okidoki's full sister...

I am really interested in this incredible technology now available to anyone (as long as you have the £££'s) however, for me, its all about nature vs. nurture... good genes aren't everything, and you never know Oki Doki II kept entire, although may look the same, may in fact, be a totally different horse and not have any of the traits that made Oki Doki (origional) such a fabulous and impressive horse...
